Maria Theresa dollars... any way to tell them apart?

I'm reading a book on Qatar right now, and all the monetary figures from the period before the oil boom are in Maria Theresa dollars (abbreviated MT$). This has (again!) renewed my interest in them. Though I've known for some time about their use throughout the mideast it's still curiously fascinating to hear about it. What a novelty!

My question for the experts here: Considering that these have been restruck for nearly 200 years, is there any way to differentiate them by mint? Also, are there any differences between the original 1780 Austrian issue and subsequent restrikes?

Any knowledge you can offer on the type, related to the above questions or not, would be appreciated. image

When I was in Saudi Arabia, I would sometimes see women wearing holed Maria Theresas as jewelry.

You could buy them all over the place too, but they were way overpriced. The Bedouin value system basically is old=expensive. image

Aw PHOOEY! The circ in my icon COULD HAVE BEEN AN ORIGINAL.

Alas, it is not. But it's the only circ I ever had. About VG as a guess.

First the Israel proof and now the Maria Theresa. I'm gettin outta da darkside.

I have one. I had the restrike link, too, but I never bothered to date mine. It has some nice toning, so it must be at least a few weeks old image - Preussen

Does your book show history of their coinage through present day? That sounds like it would be interesting reading! I've been to many countries in that area and found the people and history of the area fascinating!

So far it only mentions money in the form of throwaway statistics buttressing the larger arguments of oil and demographics or dramatizing the anecdotes. There was half a sentence offhandedly mentioning the Qatar-Dubai unified riyal and long descriptions of the economics of the pre-oil pearling industry and not much else. But interesting nonetheless. Anyway, I'm just starting it. image

The title, for those interested, is The Creation of Qatar, by Rosemarie Said Zahlan, published in 1979. It draws heavily on the British Gov't of India's records for the Gulf region. I'll update here as I get farther along.

great thread and contains helpful information. As a reminder, those that post here often don't need to be shy about awarding the rarely seen Darkside Post of The Day Award DPOTD Award. This thread wins the award, but perhaps for the first time, we are awarding a DPOTD award to those that asked the question and linked a helpful response... so SPOON and CIVITAS are big winners here... Congrats.
