??? on SELLING TO DEALERS!!

If I was to sell a coin to a board member I would in most cases expect payment first and after it has cleared ship the coin. If offering to a dealer is it out of line to expect a similar arrangement OR would they be entitled to an approval arrangement?

  • Why would a dealer be any different from a normal person?

Is his money that good and you have that much faith in the person?

Most just advertise like you are expected to send them the coins first, thats all.

Dealers are no different, and should not expect merchandise before they pay the money. They want their money before they ship to you.
There are exceptions and depends on your relationship with that dealer. JMHO

I assume you mean in the case of when you posted a coin up for sale on the boards in your own For sale thread. If this is the case you have full right to recieve payment first although you also have full right to send coins on approval at your discretion. However if you're selling coins in response to a board member's(dealer or collector,it doesn't matter) Wanted to buy thread they have full right to examine the coin first before paying for it.

  • Great Queston!!! I don`t care if you are a honest as Abe Lincoln, or if you are a dealer, collector or pres. of USA. You get my coin after I get your GOOD money. This is the law of business. Simply put go to the grocery store, buy a loaf of bread, pay for it, then you can eat it, if it is bad , take it back and they give your money back or another loaf, your choice. I could not pass this up, as some consider themselves different, here on this board at least. Chas. Collector 1st/Dealer 2nd

    Tom,
I had a coin for sale here on the B/S/T When out of the blue A dealer I had never heard of called me and asked if he could have it sent on approval because he had a customer that needed it. I checked his references with dealers I work with and they said basically no sweat. I sent it on approval and a week later received a check for it.
The dealer in question was Al Adams of Gold Rush Galleries. I laugh now realizing what a great reputation he has in his specialized field. On the phone I thought he was just a southern hick out to rob me.imageimage References will get you everything in this field.

I forget whether it was a sale thread of mine, or me responding to a WTB thread, but I was contacted with a request to send the coins on approval as the coins were for his customer and he didn't want them left in his stock if the customer didn't like them. I send them on approval did and he bought one, returning the other promptly. I've done business with him a couple other times, both here and through eBay. I did check the references he offered, and I'd do it again for a number of members here.

If you offer the coin for sell on the board, and you are contacted by someone interested in buying the coin, you should expect payment before sending it. If you contact a dealer about selling the coin to him/her, then you should expect to send the coin to them before payment.

If you really think about it. It's just as easy to fleece someone on the selling side. Requesting payment first before you ship is taking a leap of faith on the seller's good word. To think that there is some commandment that requires a seller to have a good check that has cleared the bank before sending a coin is a matter of opinion. Unless you have some sort of references (or excellent feedback) don't expect anyone to send you payment in advance just because you are the "seller."

I would grant much wider latitude to a dealer with references than to non-dealers. But on the other hand........I've lost 30X as much money to bad dealers who sheistered me than to collectors.

Are you aware of any instances on eBay where a seller was expected to ship first?

If it was ONE coin, and you had provided pictures or showed it to the dealer in person, then I would expect payment first.
We are not talking about sending in your collection so that an offer could be provided.

I am sure that you could provide references to this dealer if he/she felt some hesitation, but if the coins was 'special ' enough, I'm sure there would be other dealers around that would pay first.......

.............OR would they be entitled to an approval arrangement?

Isn't a money back guarantee somewhat an approval arrangement?image

Well I have seen on some dealers' websites where if you have coins to sell that they always expect YOU to send the coins to THEM. The thing is that they sometimes some dealers want to pay you less than the coin is worth; figuring that you would be willing to settle for a little less rather than undergo the hassle of waiting to get them back and trying to sell them again.
