A tribute to zef's new glove -- show us your old one!

Congrats to zef on winning that Maddux glove at the Cubbies game! I was getting nostalgic reading about everyone else's gloves, so thought I'd dig mine up and take some shots to share. If anyone else has their's available, shoot it, share it, and tell the story behind it.

I've had this small Rawlings GJ69 model since, well, maybe 1969 or so?? I remember saving some Coke coupons or something and sending away for this guy. It's a Jim Lefebvre signature model and has obviously served me well over the years. I even used it for softball without a problem! When I still put it on it feels soo...sooo natural...(I could go on and on but I won't! image )

I no longer want to put this mitt on my hand.

    White residue is currently unidentified.

  • Meathook,

That white residue is a mold that grows commonly on finer leathers (I am not kidding). That Gold Glove Series is definetly finer leather. There is a special term for it but I can't remember what it is. We even sell brand new gloves at my sporting goods store that have it right from the factory. Its harmless and I think you can just wipe it off or just wear off by playing catch. I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express or anything but I did I check out a book on baseball gloves at the library recently. I wish I could remember the title. It was recently published and it is a great book on glove history, nostalgia, break in methods, and Americans general love affair with their gloves. Great pic's and great thread everyone! No pic for me as my camera is sh!!ty $20 model not worthy of posting, but oh I I love old baseball gloves!

I guess "glove mold" is like a toned coin?

P.S. Nice glove (..or at least it was, "pre-mold")
