How do you tell proof from BU on Israel 1958 commem?

Huge difference in price. How can you tell which is which?

There does not appear to be any markings on the coin to distinguish the Proof from the buisness strike as in latter issues from Israel.
Krause states that the proof issue is frosted.

Either way that is a neat coin. I have thought about collecting Israel, but I have too many other things going on.

The proofs are definitely more mirrored than the uncs, but the defining characteristic - as I've been told, so somebody correct me if I'm wrong - is that there are dramatically intersecting vertical and horizontal "effects" - for lack of a better word - in the mirrors of the obverse, i.e., the dated side of the coin. I think I've seen some, all in Danny Kaye PCGS Regency holders, but my memory is fuzzy. But I know I'm at least close to accurate on this.

When I can't tell the coin gets sent to NGC listed as the expensive variety. They'll smack me down if I'm wrong.

Andy's gotta be close. This is what I found, but it's still awful nebulous.

Sounds to me like the proofs have mirrored fields and the devices are cameoed. The pictured piece sure doesn't look like a proof to me.

    Does this look.....PROOFIER?

Dang coin is CONCAVE. Guess could DIP it.

    arrrrrrrrr

  • You are better off by not dipping it, or your price value will drop right away, regardless if it is proof or not.

On first look, I personally think it's a BU but I can be horribly wrong.

OK, Top, yours is proof. Are you satisfied now?

PS: I suppose it would help if anyone knew whether or not BUs were sold with the presentation box like you have.

  • It doesn't necessary seem to be true when I checked - there are coins for this for BU.

    pant pant.....lookin BETTER..

This is from my previous research link:

"The center of the obverse will have a true mirror surface and will not contain the cross rays that appear on the regular strike"

and look.....just LOOK at that ebay thing. It has an obvious CROSS effect in field. Mine does NOT.

    Oh joy. Oh frabjous JOY.

OK, so maybe I had that backwards. Hey, I never said I was an expert on this stuff!
