Birth year set

I'm pretty new to the forums as a whole, and can't even really call myself a lurker on the World page. But got this bug yesterday to start a birth year set of world coins. I'm not sure what direction I will take it. I probably will look for countries with coins made of atleast partial precious metals. But thats for me to decide shortly. I was born in 1975 so I'm expecting to find most coins for a reasonable price.

THE QUESTION IS> Do you guys have a online or catalog shop you prefer. I am new to coin collecting and constantly learning. I have no idea as to world coins and this will be a new venture. I could use some help. Thanks and hope to keep you up dated.

  • Wait, what do you mean of partial precious metals? As in, it should have a bit of silver? (or gold)

  • That is a pretty broad horizon (any country of 1975). You may want to consider a particular series, like Crown Size? You may want to consider collecting a full set for countires of which are of your Heritage?

Would recommend a perusal of the World Coins Catalog for some ideas. Resources are pretty wide from E-bay to local coins shows and clubs...

Silver coins of 1975 would probably be of NCLT or Commemorative, as there is no CLT, same for gold.

Just some thought, oh and image to the Darkside... image
  • I am looking for all thoughts on this. I know there are a lot of countries and a lot of different denominations, and types. I am sort of doing this for the intent of it taking most of the rest of my life, but I could die tomorrow so it doesn't matter much. I know little of other countries monitary history, so I'll do plenty of reading first. BUt I did see some beautiful coins checking out the inernet yesterday. Any thoughts would be wonderful. I will most likely be looking into silver or gold coins. We will see. I don't know what all of the countries of the world have to offer yet. Some of the coins I choose may be circulation strikes some may be proofs, it will probably depend on the country, the design, and things like that. It may be kind of an ugly set as it comes to uniformity.

    any country of 1975

There are no Greek coins from that year, so it's already one less to worry about. image

  • You might want to use google.com and hit "1975 gold coin" and "1975 silver coin". I think that will give a general idea of what is the most common. image

There are lots of modern circulating coins that are extremely tough or tough in unc. Relatively
few are dated 1975. Most of the better pieces are African or European for this date. Don't ne-
glect the US coinage though. There are some of these that are pretty tough in attractive grades.
The Philly dime isn't seen nice very often and the Philly dollar. Remember the Type I dollars were
    all struck in 1975 (P & D only).

There are large numbers of gold and silver coins for '75 and a few of these are scarce.

  • Cladking, I do have a decent supply of 1975 US coinage. I don't have all in as high of grade as I would like but keep looking. I'm actually into seated and bust dimes at the moment. I just completed the New Orleans minted Morgan set in MS mostly 63's. I just was looking for something to do that would bring variety and this popped into my head. It could be my girlfriends world travel plans that got the idea started. BUt if I travel everywhere she wants,I will have less money for coins do to travel and lost work. I'm an independent contractor. Oh well. Travelling the world with a beautiful woman or staring at hunks of silver and gold, its a tough decision. Actually the coins are less aggrivating, and don't b*tch about the amount of scotch I drank last night. But I'm a sucker like every other man I know.

You might also consider proof, mint and circulation sets. I've done that a few times for 1966 (my birthyear). You probably won't get gold, but you may get some silver. If metal is no matter then there are lots of various sets out there, and alot are cheap. I got a nice 1966 Isreal mint set for $3.00. If you can't decide then just start. You'll find out what you like and where you want your collection to go. Happy hunting. image

    Edited for spelling.
  • I do like the idea of starting with my heritage, Irish, English, Czech. That is definatly a great way to start. I was also interested in some of the tough coins I have seen posted before. Real men of war, not the girly girl coins. I am leaning towards picking up to start with a couple of mint and proof sets, for countries like Canada, New Zealand, UK, Australia, and going from there. I do love the pics I have seen of the New Zealand proofs. I'll pick up a book on world coins bofore my road trip this weekend. I have to go to Telluride Co, for work on friday. Oh darn. I get out of AZ, and the heat to sit and look at athletic women for 4 or 5 days. Its a film festival weekend so I am working and the town will be full. Fun for all.
