Unusual 1965 Washington Quarter: CLADKING - WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I was high bidder on this coin tonight on Teletrade:

1965 Colorful Quarter

Of course, a critical question is always whether the coin is, indeed, regular issue and not an SMS specimen. And, I rarely see clad MS quarters with this much nice color? I bid sight-unseen, so I will get to see it later in the week. Quite an unusual 1965 Washington Quarter.

Cladking (and others) - what do you think of this coin?

Geez, that thing was over $600 when I looked at it.

Craig: Yes, my bid was well over the $600 it hammered at. Craig - just curious - if you thought it was an SMS coin, why did you want to bid $650?

  • I'm thinking you're lucky I just moved and I didn't have the money to outbid you...

It looks regular to me. Maybe just a hair short of a full strike in the hair, and maybe the very bottom of the neck. Aren't sms coins usually fully struck? Also 220... cert so just graded. I don't think they would make a mistake on it right now.... they just graded some of my business strikes sms. I called them up and they fixed it though. If the coin is as nice as the scan, holy cow nice coin! Congrats!

I think it's a satin finish coin and deserves the SF designation. Seriously, easy sms call due to the smooth fields near the rims and the squareness of the rims of the coin. Just another opinion.

It's a very nice coin and I agree it probably is not SMS. To those not familiar with
this date the reverse will look pretty weak but they don't often come nicer and the
obverse is nearly unimprovable. It's very clean, type "c" reverse and very atypical.

I'd love to see this in hand.

    It's nice toning.

No way that coin is SMS.

Nowhere near the high luster of SMS coins. Yes I know the 65's come all different ways, but look at the die polish behind Washington's head! Ever see that on a SMS?

The strike is too weak for a SMS (not a weak strike, but not a SMS strike)

    nice buy!

    Mitch,

I'm with Cladking and James. This is a business strike coin for sure. The striations behind Washingtons head and beneath/behind the eagles feathers. I would guess it was in one of those 5 coin mint sets like these or it was stored in a coin envelope for many years giving it that beautiful blueish tone. JMO image
    I love it!

Looks like I was the underbidder at $575. I probably would have gone higher but I fell
a sleep and forgot to check back.....

Nick: Cut me a break. That's (2) Washington quarters this month I had to outbid you on atauction - this CLAD quarter and a Silver VARIETY. Come on - you don't even collect clad quarters and varieties!

Thanks guys for all the opinions on whether the coin appears SMS or not. The 1965 clad quarter is a very underrated date in MS67.

Thank you for the link to the picture. What a fabulous find. I would have considered giving up all of my coins for the right to say "I was the high bidder tonight". This is a fantastic example of a 1965 clad quarter. This is an amazing example of available quarters from the entire "mid-sixties" production. Congratulations, Mitch, on quite the F.E.E.L (Find, Effort, Eye, and Luck). This coin deserves you.
  • Great Coin, Mitch. Nice to see you back on this Forum.

Ken: You must be mistaken - Nick is NOT a dealer image

Steve: Thanks for the kind words - you are quite right about "mid-1960's production. In fact, late-1960's/early 1970's closely parallels the early 1960's production as well, if you think about it. True MS67 examples of 1961-1964 silver quarters are IMHO just as difficult to locate as true MS67 examples of 1969(p) and 1971(p) quarters - except that it is primarily the Denver minted coins from 1961-1964 that are exceedingly tough, whereas by the 1969-1971, it is the Philadelphia minted coins that become so tough to locate nice. It is interesting that Denver handled the 1968-1972 quarters so well - these are some of the easiest coins in the entire clad series to locate in MS67 (other than 1996 and perhaps 1997).

JHF - Since you are not the first person to say this - I guess I was gone.

    Mitch,

That 1965 Wash quarter reminded me of the 1965 67FB Roosie I sold you. It had the same kind of color. Of all the
Roosies I have sold that was one I have regretted selling. I'm sure you would have ended up with this beauty no
matter how high I was willing to go. Since I know how much you paid for the Roosie you ripped this coin. I'm just
not good at bidding with Teletrade. It always seems I'm not at the computer around closing time. Now if there was
a snipe program for Teletrade you would have paid a lot more for it. If that coin was on ebay it might have brought
a lot more money, my snipe would have been set.....image

That coin was headed for my keepers box. Very nice coin Mitch. I'm sure it won't see the light of day for many years now.

Yes. Here's an SMS half with heavy die polish:

In fact, die polish lines are quite common on the 1965 SMS coins.

"Since I know how much you paid for the Roosie you ripped this coin"

Or, just how much I overpaid for the Roosieimage

Nick: I know your next comment is to please sell it back to you - but that Roosie Dime, as you know, is in the hands of a dedicated Clad Roosie Dime collector along with that amazing slabbed error 1965 Roosie (in an SMS holder) that came along with it. Thanks again for that great deal on those (2) 1965 Roosies.

Back to the 1965 quarter - I had the privilege of sitting with Rick Montgomery in his office at PCGS within the year prior to his departure to NGC and discussing/analyzing with him at length the issue of 1965-1967 SMS vs. non-SMS coins (with misc examples of SMS and non-SMS coins in hand). What I took out of that meeting was there are no true diagnostics to definatively tell the difference between the SMS and non-SMS 1965-67 coins. It is a judgment call of the trained expert in this field who essentially must decide the manufacture of the coin through careful study of the TEXTURE of the surfaces. And, no question, often times it is a very close call.

Stunning coin and one not likely found on Teletrade.
I think anything in the area of $600. is a steal. True Business Strike, IMHO.

Sleeper coin in the superb grade of (PCGS) MS67. Add the color and it's an "A Box" keeper, for sure.

    Nice catch Mitch!
I don't even collect clad Washingtons but that one is truly special.

Pat: Thanks. I drove over to Teletrade today and picked up the 1965 Quarter. I believe the coin is a no question Regular issue specimen and is a beautiful coin. I guess this sight-unseen purchase of mine proves the old adage that it is "better to be lucky than good".

"so sight unseen means looking at the image of a coin is not really "seeing" it ! ?"

I was simply referring to my personal view on the subject - that determining SMS vs. non-SMS for 1965-1967 coins is a matter of carefully examining the texture of the surfaces and extremely difficult (to say the least) to do from a scan.
