Wow. Do strong BGS subs really make this much of a difference?

94 Arod SP BGS 9

PSA 9 usually sells 300-350, bgs 9's slightly higher.. $821 for this piece of garbage? I really can't figure out how those corners got a 9.5. The top left and bottom left are both showing white. If BGS is this lenient now I've got a submission to put together.

  • I think a big factor is that this is an older BGS card (the subs are on the back). From what I understand, higher grades from BGS were much tougher then.

While I agree they were tougher then, I can't understand how it doubles the value... Besides, check out those corners...yikes.

I agree. I've got a PSA 8 that blows this one out of the water. Maybe I should resubmit before others catch on that this BGS is a joke.

After seeing scans of that '63 Fleer checklist that got a PSA 9 I'm done assuming that you can see corner wear on a scan.

Premiums do get attached for cards whose subs are all at or above the overall grade. This makes sense to me, because how can a card with NM-Mt+ (8.5) corners be considered mint? Sort of like a 9OC card. And BGS 9s of this card are tough to get, always have been. Standard right-out-of-the-pack grades are more usually 8-8.5. And to give them the benefit of the doubt, the plastic sleeve that BGS cards are put into can distort the scanner light and make it look like corners are rounded, though it doesn't look like that here.

First thing I noticed when I looked at this card was - awful corners...then, I looked at the BGS "subgrades", and I saw corners = 9.5!

What an absolute farce this is. I can't believe people still fall for it.

I'll bet you doughnuts to holes that the corners aren't really that bad. I know what you're talking about (I saw the scan as well, and the corners look terrible), but while I firmly believe the most grading companies are inconsistent I've never seen nm corners in a 9 slab. Off center, yes. Rough edges, yes. But not the corners.

That scan we saw of the '63 Checklist that graded a 9 was a real eye-opener for me. That card looked ROUGH in scan-- so much so that I felt bad for the guy who posted it, since I figured that card was a 6, or a slider 7, at best. When it came back a 9 I realized that one of two things were true; either a) I just saw the world's worst mint 9 card, or b) the scan was distorted.

My guess is the latter. And the same is probably true for this A-Rod.

  • Bought from them before. I returned the high $$ PSA 10 card due to chippingS on top edge of the card (MY PSA 9 of that card looks better). They did exchange it to a nice PSA 10. They said chippingS probably due to transport/shipping (UPS).

    Could be I guess...?

It is the same farce or idiocrisy as when a registry or slab chaser pays significantly more for a PSA 9 than an SGC 96. It defies all logic, but yet is reality.
