Crack open the holder or use "Review"???

I have several vintage cards in 8 holders that I can't find anything wrong with (in all kinds of lighting and with a 10x loupe). I'm just wondering what would give me the best shot at 9s, crack open the holder & submit raw, or submit under the "review" type of service? If anyone has experience with this, I'd appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

    Kurt....

Crack and resubmit. I have had luck with doing this as long as the card you are resubmitting is really close to the higher grade.

Definitely crack, if you need eye protection though, you might be doing it the hard way. (And potentially the dangerous way) Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

I cracked a few GAI cards in the last few days for a submission... Hoping I do as well as I did before. image

Depends on the holder. For PSA and SGC it's really easy- you can almost do it with your bare hands. The best way is to take a small straight blade screwdriver and insert into the seam and pop the corners, starting with the corners near the flip. Then work your way around lightly and it will pop right off.
GAI and Becket are much harder, for those use of a dremel tool would probably work the best. The hardest I've opened are PRO's, they have good reason for you not wanting to open their holder!

I've never used a dremel on holders, but those that have suggest clipping the corners and then prying the halves apart with a screwdriver.
Kurtman9 posted a link to the best advice for cracking holders, Bruce Morelands page. If you have time go back and look at the rest of his site, it's really well done. Wish BruceMo was still around here. The part about taking a PSA card that was floating around in the holder to the paint mixer at Home Depot to see if movement would damage it is classic.

  • If you feel a true error was made, then review is the way to go but for those folks that resubmit and resubmit shooting for a higher grade, I say shame on you.

Arent we supposed to buy the card, not the holder? Its the same freaking card people, let it go.
