A New Charles VI Thaler

It's been a while since I bought a new thaler but one arrived last week which is pretty darn nice:
Numismatics must be one of the most dangerous hobbies known to man: you wouldn't believe all the troubles the seller had before actually delivering the coin: surgury, dead mother, kid troubles... Fortunately, filing a Paypal dispute focused his attention and the coin arrived shortly after that.
As for the coin, this is a part of my run of Holy Roman Emperor portrait thalers. Very nice with coloration that while not mosterish is attractive and indicitive of unmolested silver. Strike is super and the fields are clean, just a few hairlines holds the grade back.
This an upgrade to my old Charles VI, here's the old one:

And attractive ones too.

Great definition of an original surface. I have many older coins which are bright that fade to grey or darker-great look!

<< <i>Nice looking coins, James. >>
Thanks! It was a nice way to end a drought.
<< <i>Loverly upgrade, could make me think about collecting silver! Nah!! >>
You could always dabble on the side.
<< <i>Beautiful! - Preussen >>
Thanks!
<< <i>Too bad I dont collect Austrian coins, but I like the high details of coins that old >>
Every coin claims the title King of Germany, I think you could sneak them in on a loophole.
As for the dertails, minors certified by NGC as MS64 can be hit or miss but I've never seen a thaler certified with that grade that was not excellent.
<< <i>Ah, real coins. >>
My wife says the same thing after watching me sell bunches of coins & stamp first day covers.
<< <i>Wow, I think I am going to switch over to Austrian coins one day. My focused collection is getting a bit way too pricy and I don't think I can afford any Imperial Russian commemorative coins at the moment. >>
When I first started collecting these I was torn between Russian and Austrian coinage. I'm just a sucker for a double headed eagle, I guess.
<< <i>nice... congrats on such an outstanding edition >>
Thanks!

What was the sellers real problem, did you get it at a bargain price?
<< <i>JJ, nice coin. I think I've seen it somewhere else....on the other side!!

I like posting over there as they will host picture files as large as 150K compared to 50K over here. However, I rented a domain name and web hosting so now I can flood the world with giant pictures where ever I please!

I don't know, although I'm sure it didn't sell for as much as he wanted. Several other forium members have had problems with him as well.

Australians are a beautiful people - almost as attractive as the Greeks.
Meh, those coins rarely go very cheaply. Trust me, look at the very last second and the prices will horrify you I have been collecting Russian coins for at least 3 years and this year seems to be the worst time to be collecting
<< <i>Awesome! I'd love to see you selling more high end stuff like the MS-62 Thaler on eBay. There's a real lack of slabbed darkside stuff. I'm very tempted by this piece... >>
Arrange financing now if you want to bid seriously for that coins. Russian stuff is the strongest selling country these days - bar none.
As for myself, In additional to my usual I have a box of really good stuff I've been holding back until selling season improves. A preview:
1833 Switzerland Geneva Sol NGC MS67
1890 H British North Borneo 1c NGC MS65RB
1877 Haiti 20c Essai NGC PF64BN
1564-1594 Austria Hall Taler NGC AU58
1949 Canada $1 NGC MS67

I'll likely get out-bid on the Russian; it's nice to dream however. That's some nice stuff JamminJ! I'm still loving the MS-66 German Mark I got from you - blinding cartwheel. If you are willing to sell that 1949 Canadian silver dollar outright, how much is your asking price?

Last June's Heritage auction included two 1949 Canada $1s in PCGS MS66 holders, bringing $253 & $264 (including the BP). I think a similar amount for my coin is about right, lets say $260 delivered.
Check out lots 12706 and 12707 in the June 3, 2005 Signature Sale for comparison.
