Finally got my 2005 Panda

Glad they decided to continue the mother and cub theme that they started with the 2004's. Prior to this, the only mother and cub designs could be found in larger coins (5 tr oz or more) and in medallic coin show commemoratives. The high price of precious metals is keeping me from acquiring as much as I used to. Nice to see in paper that my collection's melt value is higher than my actual total purchase value but I still miss the good old days when I could afford them more though their melt is lower than my purchase. For those unfamiliar, here's a photo I found on the web of this year's design.

Nice Coin. What is a good source to purchase these from? My wife and I are planning to adopt a baby girl from China next year and I would like to start a collection of silver pandas for her.

    Thanks

Silver Eagle Coins is a CU forum member and has good prices. Silver Eagle Coins link
    Kelley's is another. Kelley's link
Also, nothing beats checking out your local coin shows so can cherry pick the coin you are getting . Ebay is also worth a check. Good luck with the adoption. image

  • You might wanna try www.pandaamerica.com as they have a ridicious range of panda coins, including (or used to have) an ultra rare trial platinum 1982 panda coin. Currently, there are platinum, gold, silver and *PALLADIUM* too for this year's Panda's coins. image

Speaking of which reminded me of palladium coins, are there any countries that still mint coins in palladium? It has been a while since major countries have been minting coins in palladium. :/

gxseries, I saw that 1 ounce 1982 platinum panda and would love to have it, except I am too cheap and poor to pay Panda America prices. I have seen the fractional platinum pandas for recent years but I have limited myself to 1 ouncers. Besides the 1982 pattern, 1 ounce platinum pandas were only issued for 1987, 88, 89 and 90 with the same design as the gold issues. There was also a 1 ounce platinum issue from 1987 commemorating the New York coin show. Luckily I was able to get all of them before platinum prices went up. There was also a 1988 Basel Coin Show commemorative that was struck in gold using dies saying 1 troy ounce platinum. I guess they had the dies created but no platinum planchets. It is considered an error. Funny thing about it is that the total issue is 1000 (400 marked gold and 600 marked platinum so the correct one is rarer than the error! LOL). The only 1 ounce issue in palladium is 1989. I never really got into palladium as their density makes them too close to be silver looking.

  • omg jesus. Now that's something I can daydream... image

I even struggled to get hold of one ounce Russian ballet palladium proof coin, but the prices aren't that insane as the platinum pandas... pity I didn't hoard platinum ages ago. I bought my first *and last* half ounce platinum when the price was just around 700 per ounce... right now? 900? omg imagine if someone hoarded 100 ounce of those. 20k easily. :/

  • Skingspan,
My wife and I adopted a little girl from China 2 years ago.
Just had a reunion with 3 other familes that adopted from the same orphanage in Chattanooga.
We went through CCAI, chinese childrens adoption international.
If you have any questions please let me know, more than happy to help.
We bought a huge load of silver panda's in Hong Kong for her and I have been collecting them every year since.
    Good Luck
