Not true, Doug. I sold this fella lots of the tougher early mintmarked dates in red and they are far from picked over! Mostly considerably better than average pieces and some real stoppers! He's liquidating for personal reasons.
I think if he had used larger photos of the tougher dates he might have had better action, but it's always tough to sell a nearly complete collection intact, as it is hard to find a buyer that will take 90% of the coins he doesn't need just to get the few he does need.
Richard Nachbar does this..sells complete collections and just accepts bids by a cut-off date. I am not sure at all that this maximizes the price...in fact, I believe this minimizes it. Much easier on the seller time-wise, but I think disastrous for his pocketbook.
Selling them like this still makes it look like a boneyard. If I was selling this group, it would certainly be worth the time and effort to list at least the first half of the collection in individual auctions.
I agree. I don't think I could EVER sell a collection as a whole. It's not too often that you see collections this large on eBay. Thanks for the info everybody!
