A couple new discoveries/CONECA listings, and some thoughts on attribution

Just got a 10 coin submission of new discoveries back from the CONECA/ICG program, and thought I would share a couple. When I think I may have a new variety, I exhaustively research all the books and web info I can find to try to ID it. If that fails, I send them to an attributor, usually James Wiles with CONECA, as he does 20th century US stuff. He is very hard to get a new listing out of, as his philosophy is that it cannot just be new, but not minor, as he judges minor. There are attributors that award a new listing designation as long as it can be determined to be new, without judgement. I would prefer that, but the CONECA pedigree means something to me. When CONECA began this attribution/slabbing program, I was critical of the decision to go with ICG, because in my mind ANACS had already established itself in this area. I continue to wish it was ANACS, among other reasons being, as you can see below, ICG cannot even be bothered to put s/s on the rpm slab, and the variety info seems secondary. Anyway, I'd advise those with what they think are new discoveries to go through the somewhat laborious process, rather than always wonderingimage

1976 1c DDO-1 designated CONECA 1-O-I, "strong extra thickness LIBERTY, IGWT, date." 1 known. Only CONECA doubled die, obverse or reverse, known for 1976p 1c.

    Neat discoveries.

But I have yet to figure out what DMR means. Anyone know??

Thank you - I'll have to check into that. (I have a Kennedy in an ANACS holder with a DMR designation.)

  • Nice coins! I think I am listed as the first to report the 1975-P DDO #1 Lincoln but I haven't slabbed any yet.

Anyone have an idea when Mr. Wiles will resume attributing coins again?

Congrats pharmer. It is because of people like yourself who do the exhaustive work you describe (and if anyone doesn't realize---it is exhaustive work), that our hobby continues to grow in new and exciting directions. I do believe that anyone who really gets into this hobby will, at some point, gravitate toward die varieties because they are such an important part of the coining process. Varieties are not only fun, but they are exciting finds and add to the field of numismatics.
Besides- die variety hunting is still something you can do without laying down big bucks for a slabbed coin. It is a great feeling when you DISCOVER something that hasn't been noticed in so many years. It is, in my opinion, a growing part of our hobby and offers the average Joe as much of a chance to cherrypick or find a valuable coin. Now I have to go back to my jar of Lincoln's and have more fun.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
