The 0 fb guy won another auction a few days ago from a different seller (albeit a cheap one) and is the high bidder on another auction. He's registered in AZ and the seller of the card you're bidding on is registered in IL, so they're not the same person. (I don't think he would be bidding to win on any auctions if he were registered under a phony address).

So, no, you can't assume it's a shill.

What was the item? Was it a 1950 Bowman Bill Dudley card?

If not, I'd be uncomfortable, only because of the zero feedb

Zero-feedback bidders drive me crazy as a seller, because other bidders assume it's a shill and back off. I know everybody has to start somewhere, and we were all zeros once. I just wish newbies would start out buying cheap stuff before entering bids on $500 and $1,000 cards.

To answer the question, I would feel that there was a good chance of foul play, but "yverdon" was willing to bid over $4500.00 and that's the risk you take.

I had an auction that I was bidding on several months ago. I put in a bid that was foolishly high as I was expecting the guy who seems to always snipe me to get it.
Someone else bid 20-30 times in $2.00 to $3.00 dollar increments until they outbid me (about $75.00, only one person other than myself bid on the item at this point) and then retracted their bid. I got an outbid notice, felt a little relieved, and then was informed that I was the high bidder and won the lot at my high bid! I complained about it to eBay and the seller. I didn't get any help from the seller, he denied any shilling going on. There was some "funny" looking bid history on the guy who retracted, "shill" guy never bid more than $15.00-$20.00 on anything, and they had done deals before. I got some kind of excuse/rules B.S. from eBay about retracted bids at the end of an auction not cancelling ALL of "shill" boys bids. The topper to the whole mess was the item was most likely fake, unless the JD McCarthy postcards were being done in the mid 1970's. Eventually I paid for the item and was glad I didn't bid even higher.

The lesson I learned was to either bid late and monitor the auction, or to just bid what I am comfortable paying and just forget about it.
