Wow, 24 bids in the first hour. Looks like you may not be the only one loooking to take the plunge. Looks like a great lot. Any estimates at what it might go off at. I'm guessing 800.00.

A couple things make me pause ...

"Cards are in average to above average condition."

"PLEASE KEEP IN MIND WHEN BIDDING: We are not experts."

"We do this just for fun."

The vague wording about condition, and the disclaimers, make me wonder whether it is a group of VG to VG-EX cards, whether many of them have creases -- perhaps the dregs of a collection that was bought and cherry-picked.

They may do it for fun, but they are professional profiteers and are not so stupid as to sell an entire collection for a tiny fraction of its value without removing the high-value cards to grade and sell individually. That's not to say this group may not go for a bargain price, just don't be surprised if all the big stars have creases or other problems.

A good rule of thumb on eBay: Somebody selling a ton of vintage cards who claims not to be an expert is probably a bigger expert than you are.

    JR,

Thanks for the input. I agree that the "we're not experts" schtick is a little cheesy, but a couple of things make me think this auction may be a diamond in the rough. First, they have very good feedback. Second, they accept paypal, so the winner could potentially make the sellers' lives miserable if the buyer received truly crappy cards (even though you'd lose in the end), and third, most importantly, is the fact that they offer potential buyers the chance to "view" the cards. I e-mailed the seller earlier today and, even though I don't live near where the cards are purportedly located, I asked if I could look at the cards. This was the seller's response:

"ABSOLUTELY! My wife and I both work full time during the day, but any night this week (or on the weekends). E-mail me back to set up a time."

I might give it a go.

Thanks to all for your input. Keep it coming!

Oh I don't think they're scammers. I think they're just not giving the whole story on the condition of the cards offered in this group. Very hard to claim "items not as described" when they don't describe anything specifically. All the same, it might still be a good buy, even if none are better than EX and most of the big dogs are VG. Good luck.

I am meeting the seller to check it out tonight and will report back what I think. Unless, of course, the cards are fantastic and I don't want to tip off any potential competition on the auction... In which case I will accidentally forget to post until after the auction is over.

Although unless many of the key cards are honestly (and miraculously) NM or better, I think the price is already way too high..

Met Tony (the seller) last night. Very, very friendly guy, completely honest. I believe everything in the auction about "not being an expert" etc.

    Regardless... the cards.

We looked through all the individual cards listed in the auction. Didn't get to see the boxes of commons, but believe they are generally same condition as the stars. Biggest shame about the 53 Bowman Reese (creased) and that non of the Mantle's were without a noticeable flaw. Actually, just about all of the big stars had some noticeable flaw, keeping them in the PSA 3-5 range (with some of the late 60s stars pushing EX-MT or NM in some cases probably). As expected, most all of the individual cards pre 1970 ranged from VG to EX/MT (few) with the T206 probably G, although I'm not the best judge of those. The SMR values of all the stars in EX 5, after assumed grading fees, comes out somewhere in the ballpark of $3K, and given the top two potential value cards (Reese and 1933 Goudey Bengough) are probably VG-3, I will definitely pass. Although there's plenty of commons in nice shape, and maybe a handful of good grading opportunity. Overall it's a solidly EX collection... and already way over priced if you were interested in investment.

The seller cancelled the 0 feedback bidder. The zero feedback bidder is selling a 1968 Topps set--very mysterious. Looks like a 2nd grader wrote the description:

"This will be for... 1 set of the 1968 Topps Baseball.... All the cards will be sent in a binder... over all this set would probably grade anywhere from exmt to nrmt condition.. In my opinion.. Useing the tips provided by the monthly beckett vintage price guide. You will be the mantle which is in exmt or better.. most likely better.. I am prolly down grading these items so I won't upset people in my judgement of the card's conditions... the ryan and bench cards are in exmt - nrmt conditions with all the major star's such as koufax, aaron, clemente and so on in no less condition than exmt... with all commons and minor star's in ex-mt to nrmt .. with alot in prolly just nrmt condition's... with only some commons and minor stars in lower conditions but no lower than ex +..... Thanks for taking the time to look at my auction and please check out my others.. good luck and thanks again...

I take Paypal, mostly so your purchase can be insured that it will come to you..

I would perfere paypal.. because i have'nt gain much feedback yet.. and than also you would be insured that the item will actually be sent too you.

altho money orders, and personal check's are excepted....

please allow 1-2 weeks for shipping...

2 weeks for personal checks.. allowing me to let them clear

    shipping will be free......

but you must pay for insured shipping... which is $10.00

Once again thanks to all who take the time to look.......................

    Shipping overseas will be extra"

That would scare me more than the no feedback.

Koufax has a 68 Topps card?

    And those scans look stolen.

The winner "catsranger" left the seller really good feedback on this lot. Thanks to all you knuckleheads for talking me out of bidding. I knew this was a diamond in the rough! image

Believe me, after seeing them I wouldn't have touched it for more than $2K or so.

Admittedly, I am speaking as someone who would've tried to resell everything for profit.

But I'm not a full time dealer, and I'm not aiming for 60% profit margins. All I try to do is make a few nickles so I can buy the cards I want. Before I went to see it I put together a spreadsheet of all the $ cards with PSA 5 values, subtracted grading fees and ebay listing fees, and came up with a bit less than $2800K in potential value. And that figure also assumed the two biggest cards - the 53 Reese and #1 Goudey - were PSA 5s, which they weren't - each a 3 at best due to pretty bad creasing, which would knock the overall value down a bunch, since those two in 5s represented a huge chunk of the overall value, of course.

What I'm try to say is, don't believe the hype. The buyer is probably happy because they have a bunch of cards to play with and probably don't know any better, and they should be happy - they are worth it to him/her. But in the end, they paid WAY WAY too much and for any dealer, part-time dealer, collector, or even careful buyer, it was way over priced.

    So you're welcome! ;-)

I agree with dg. The winning bidder may have left positive feedback because the lot was dvd as described. This doesn't mean he or she did not overpay. The winning bidder may be very happy with the lot for the mere fact they are building mid to low grade sets. Who knows? But again, I agree with dg the lot sold for more than it was worth.

I'll eat my posts if the winning bidder posts here to the contrary.
