I was so thrilled with my first submission that I followed it up with a second one five years later.

    It gets better.

You'll probably be amazed at how poorly you do judging the quality of cards. I know I was... After about 3000 total submissions to variousl grading companies, I started nailing grades at a rate of 80%+ If you've spent enough time reading over the grading standards and took your cards to task under a halogen lamp, a fine point ruler and a 10x loupe you'll probably be within a grade or so...The hard part is always being unbiased, seems you always think your cards should/will grade better than they do. That's been my experience at least. Now I'm sometimes so picky about it, I've had cards that I was hesitant to send in because I thought they were borderline 7-8's and they came back 9's. Which totally throws me off. image

I hope you do well with your first sub. I guess my advice would be that if you sent in vintage, don't be surprised to see a bunch of cards you thought were 7's or 8's come back in 5 and 6 holders... and if it's modern, you'll get back a lot more 8's than you probably think.

Hopefully for you, it comes out a lot better than that!

Good luck and let us know how you do!

(I just sent in 96 cards this morning myself)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. You are right, it takes awhile to start getting the grades down. I've been at it for about a year and a half, and like you was surprised at cards I thought were 7's and 8's coming back at lesser grades (I had dealers submitting my stuff.....not very much, and I submitted a few things to GAI and Beckett). I've gotten better and now like you, I'm so hard on cards they often come back better.

In this submission, I sent in two very nice, high end cards ('68 Carew and '63 NL HR Leaders), three borderline possible sevens ('57 Mantle, Kluzewski, and Clemente), and one 5 or 6 that I just wanted to get graded ('57 Colavito). If I get nice grades (7 or higher) on the first two, and one seven out of the borderline three, I'd be happy. If the one seven is the Mantle, I'd be ecstatic.

  • Just got my grades from my first sub. Was hoping for 7's. Guess I need to scrutinize my cards a bit more.

I happen to have an extremely good eye. I was very thrilled with my first submission and have followed that up with about 100 other cards submitted. People tend to have good luck on their first submission.

After my first submission I felt a burning deep inside me like a soaring golden hawk. Thanks for asking.

  • Ron, good luck with your first submission. I agree with envoy98. I didn't have much success with my first one, mostly 8s (some with qualifiers) and a few 9s and that was with 1982 cards. I tried again 5 months later with much better results. I even had a few 10s the second time around with fewer 8s. Here's hoping you do much better than I on you first try.
