Please help to identify this coin: Denmark 1662 2 Mark

image

I cannot find this coin in the Krause catalog. It fits somewhere between KM #218 and # 259.2, I think. The problem is that there is not a documented coin for this type dated 1662. The design is very similar to the coins pictured in Krause, with the only difference being that the reverse has one lion, as opposed to 3 small lions. The lion on the coin imaged above looks like a German state design, but I cannot find it there either. I am not very good at attributing foreign coins, so I turning to the experts on the World Coin Forum. Thanks in advance!

Well, I am away from my Krause catalogs at the moment, but I can say that finding unlisted dates is not uncommon in the 17th century stuff- it has happened to me a couple of times.

Another thing is that sometimes you might have a colonial issue rather than a homeland piece. I dunno if that is the case here or not.

In my 17th century Krause (which is rather old now, being the First Edition), I have found that many times the coin I am seeking is listed but not pictured- I have had to dig through several types that have only word descriptions.

Perhaps somebody who is properly armed with a reference will be able to help. It is a very handsome coin!

Nice to see you here in the Dark.

Maybe MadMuffin or 1jester or somebody else will know this one.

You might not know how to attribute it, but I'll bet you know how much it cost. Was it expensive? And if it doesn't turn out to be rare, will it need a new home? image

  • You can't find it in Denmark, because it is Norwegian. Try KM#33

There are many diferent varities, and some of them are rare. I will need to check a couple of my Norwegian books.

  • In Holger Hede's book, a well respected Danish / Norwegian reference, it is listed as #67G under Frederik III Norway.

It says that there are verities, but it does not show the different ones.

I still have a couple of other books to find.

Hi L.M. I actually do not own the coin. A non-collector brought it to my office last week. His story is that he bought it at a flea market for $15. He could not find any information about the coin on the internet so he called me. He brought it in and it really stumped me. I told him that I could not identify it but I would be willing to image the coin and post it on the World Coin Forum for him. All that I get out of my effort is a free education. And a free education I did get tonight!

Refrema, thank you very much! I was going nuts with this coin. The "DANSKE" really threw me for a loop. I appreciate your knowledge.

The guy who bought it called me today and asked if I had found any information on the coin. That's when I realized that I forgot to post the pic. He said that he went back and bought a lot of 20 or so coins from the same flea market dealer.

  • Usually Norwegian coins have the crossed hammer symbol on them, but this started about 1700 under Frederick IV.

Before that the best tip off that it is Norwegian is the Lion inside the Crescent. Not all coins have that, but most of them from about 1500 have that lion.

For those kind of prices I would buy them instantly.

    Cool Coin!

  • What seems strange to me is that the obverse die is nearly identical to the Danish 2 Mark coin of the same period. Even the reverse legend is the same. The only difference is the lion design on the reverse. Were Norwegian and Danish coins struck at the same mint in the mid-1600's?
