frustrating eBay seller

Okay, what would you do?

auction ended Tuesday, about 3:30 PM eastern time (seller is in UK, so would be about 8:30 PM his time)
PayPal e-mail time stamped Tuesday, about 9:15 PM eastern time (this would be about 2:15 AM his time)
a full 1½ days later, e-mail time stamped Thursday 3:00 PM eastern time, I get this message from seller:

"Hi

Sorry for the delay in getting out your order that you won the other night. I am awaiting delivery of some large padded envolopes which I use. They should arrive in a few days time and then I can forward on your coin.

Regards"

Kind of pisses me off. Why do I have to wait because he can't get his crap together to have the proper shipping materials BEFORE the auctions end. I will hold final judgement until the package arrives. It better be well packaged, that's all I have to say!!!

No offense, but I think you're being ridiculously impatient. This is a growing and very disturbing trend. If buyers don't get email responses within an hour and shipment within 2 days, they throw a hissy fit. Would you complain that Amazon did not ship an order within 2 days of you making it? It usually takes several days to a week for an order to ship from most retail establishment, yet everyone expects more from the guy selling on Ebay out of his garage or basement.

PayPal's seller protection policy is a good barometer of this. They consider a reasonable shipping limit to be 7 days.

Remember, not everyone does this full time. Not everyone goes to the post office or office supply store every day. With the price of gasoline approaching $3.00 per gallon, I'll be damned if I go to the post office more than twice a week or so. It's fiscally prudent to combine trips.

    2 days? Please...

  • As an eBay seller and buyer I know and (believe me) sympathize with your situation. There's NO excuse for slow shipping and if you look at my auctions "greenfdhog" you'll see I make every effort to move my items FAST. Heck, I was in the hospital after back surgery and arranged for somebody to ship my items before I was admitted. image

But enough about my actions, this is about the situation your in-the-middle-of. This individual is NOT a good seller right now. Does their feedback reflect anything negative about slow shipping. Use this link and check it out http://toolhaus.org/ This is not good service to the buyer, especially since you paid them so quickly.

    Good Luck

This guy is a slow shipper and poor seller because he hasn't shipped within 2 days???

    Holy unrealistic expectations, Batman!

I guess I must be more patient than most other people. I usually don't blow a head gasket and go ballistic until at least a few weeks pass...

If I'm not mistaken he's upset about the seller saying their waiting for the envelops which he (the seller) should have had to begin with...

  • Meh, I sure can understand either side of the argument. You can have either impatient buyer or slow seller. At least the seller replied to you, explaining the situation... image

That's like being upset about the temperature being 85 degrees instead of 80. Find something worthwhile to be upset about.

If anything, the seller is at least being honest about why the shipment will be delayed; he could just as easily have said nothing and shipped the coins when he got around to it.

Sorry, I think the buyer is being unreasonable.

(and before anyone thinks that I'm shilling for sellers, I have over 1,300 Ebay transactions with 80%+ being as a buyer rather than a seller).

I'm with coinpictures on this one.

    a full 1½ days later,

!!!! It's only a day and a half. He could have chosen not to tell you what was really happening and you'd never know about this,as the delay would have been blamed on the Post Office.

If you want to know what a really slow seller does, just wait until I tell you one of my recent stories. But I need to have the (very expensive) parcel in hand first. It's already been three full weeks and counting,it's not here yet and it's NOT the fault of the Post Office, that's all I can say for now.

It's just how I do business, and have done so since October of 1997 with 100% positive feedback. Everybody sees things differerently. Yes, the seller did let the buyer know the situation. No Biggie...

EEK! I just realized that the way I wrote my post above, someone might easily have construed that my Ebay feedback rating was 80%+ (which is just absolutely abysmal).

Feedback rating of 99.5%, and 80%+ of my 1,300+ transactions have been as a buyer...

My bad. It's been a long day.

Sometimes I never even hear from the seller after I've emailed them. As long as the item arrives in what I consider to be a reasonable time frame, I'm okay with it. If it goes beyond 10 days from my date of payment, I'll email them again and raise a little hell.

His reason, in this case, of being without proper packaging materials is just sloppy planning on his part, but I wouldn't be terribly upset about it. Now, if the item doesn't arrive ... well, that's another story.

"It usually takes several days to a week for an order to ship from most retail establishment,"

I don't know where you buy things, but when I buy bike parts, the order is usually at my door within 3-days and shipping is 10 percent or less of the value of the order.

This seller might be guilty of poor planning, but most of us have at one time or another. I would cut him a little slack Kuhli.image

I try to ship most items no later than 48 hours after I have been paid for them, but sometimes issues have a way of coming up. Perhaps this guy went to his local office supply store and they were out of what he needed and he had no choice but to mail order them.

You can't make broad generalizations based on one data point. Just because your one store ships the same day, it is not indicative of general practice. Most vendors TRY to ship within 1-2 days, but most do not. I've ordered from enough different online retailers (Amazon, Dell, Outpost, Newegg, Buy.com, Onecall.com, Crutchfield.com, BestBuy.Com, amongst others) to know that the norm is 2+ days before shipment. Yes, sometimes certain vendors do ship same day or next day.

The original point being that throwing a hissy after 1.5 days is unwarranted. It's like ordering a widget from one of the above vendors and then getting a notice that the product is temporarily out of stock or backordered and will ship when available or on date X... It happens all the time.

Now, if a week or more goes by and there's no indication that the order has shipped, THEN some frustration is to be expected. Not after 1.5 days.

  • Two days to a few does not seem unreasonable to me, when I auction I try to ship within a day or two, but my advantage is that the PO is a 3-4 minute walk from my work,
so in theory I could go over there every day Mon-Fri.

I also state in my auctions that I travel for work a bit, so there can be delays in shipments, and buyers are welcome to enquire.

I would give the seller an 'A' for coresponding and being honest... It may be worth the wait, I have seen some pretty crappy shipping techniques.....
