Really Cool Greek Ancient

Here is a really cool Greek, Seleukid Kingdom serrated edge follis I cleaned up and got attributed at the www.Wildwinds.com Ancient Site. Apparently, this coin was never ID'd before! If you click on the Alexander II link and look at the 5th coin, you'll see the listing on their site. It's weight is 6.6 grams and 18mm in diameter.

Alexander II

  • Nice coin! What is with the edge though? Some random test cuts? image

  • I guess some of the coins during that period were cast bronze, this one still has the casting spru attached, and like various others has serrated edge as well. I'm not sure why this type of edge was popular during this time frame as well as the off center portraits. Dionisis is the figure on the obverse.

Many silver denarii of the Roman Republican period were struck with serrate edges similar to that. I always thought they were kinda neat.
