U think this DSL PSA 9 is a little OC? I do!

I luv Discount Sportscards Company, in fact I've purchased many of thousands of dollars worth of material from them over the years. But you gotta call it like it is:

PSA "threw DSL a bone" by grading this card a PSA 9, don't you think?

  • Not a pretty 9 in my humble opinion. And I buy from them as well!
I truly believe the "buy the card and not the holder" philosophy and I have gotten much tougher on what I will bid on now.

Both OPC's and 71's(bb and fb) are tough!

The centering on the 71's is brutal and if you see a card that you think is dead on on the front, it will be way oc t/b on the back. IMHO I think the 71's were meant to have more space at the top than the bottom and that is how the backs usually show. On the ones that are 50/50 on the front(measuring from the bottom of the lettering and the top border of the pic), the back will be 90/10. However when the front looks like this example, the back is almost dead on T/B. I have seen lots of these and the 71 fb's too ad that has been my findings.

As for the edges, I have found that in OPC they are almost exclusively rough cut. And the having a white backdrop only highlights this with a black bordered card. This doesn't bother me nearly as much as a card with a tilt but that is personal preference.

And like BWF and many others have said, buy the card not the holder.

    Here we go again...

'So and so gets preferred grades from PSA....look at this card!'

  • Well I look at it this way. I don't believe it's a conspiricy because someone always talks. If DSL and 4SC's was getting special treatment I think it would be a well known fact. The fact is that these two company's submit A LOT of cards. The fact that you find some that maybe are overgraded doesn't seem that odd. There is human error involved in this process. So if Joe Blow submits 100 cards and finds a couple that slipped by what do you think will happen when one of the big boys sends in a 1,000 cards?? Graders make mistakes plain and simple. I think if you do the math the number of "questionable" grades these two sellers get is relative to the amount of cards they submit. This is not a perfect science. Plus you always have the option of passing on a card you don't like instead of obsessing about it on a message board.

I see what you're saying but I have found from buying and selling 1971 Topps on ebay that when placing that black border up against a black background for the scan, that "white edge" scanning affect gets on there. That card I would be very certain is not chipped on the edges the way it appears on the scan.

  • card looks fine to me i have never seen an untrimmed 1971 opc that does not have fuzziness around the border. it is the cut not wear and as most of us know a rough or fuzzy cut is allowed by psa especially on opc cards. if i were interested in the card i would have no problem adding it to my collection. obviously dsl thought it was a nice card as well or it would not have been sent in.image

the card won't sell anyway, 71 opc psa 9's do not go for that much. the 1/1 is pretty irrelevant

It seems like it technically fits within the standards. That being said - it would not be a 9 I would be especially proud of.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Rough-cuts, which OPC's almost always are in the '70s, and 1971 don't go well together. It can be fresh out of a pack and the rough-cut against the black makes you think "wow, look at all that chipping" because you see white. But it's not. I am guessing the grader looked at the black edges very carefully and concluded it would be mint if the card was white.

Bottom line is--nobody is twisting any of your arms to buy this questionable( and i mean questionable) 9. I have bought many from DSL and have passed on many for the same reason. I will just wait until a better 9 comes along.

I thought it was a fair grade. Believe me, there are far more egregious examples out there.
