All right, I know this is not strictly a coin topic, but we did spend alot of time TALKING about coins.
This last weekend Boiler78 and I flew a floatplane from Seattle to Anchorage. Weather was great, scenary was wonderful, food and beer was exceptional and we talked about coins ALOT!
Weather was foggy on Friday so, instead of moping around the airport, we played 18 holes. After getting going at 1PM, first stop was Port Hardy at the north tip of Vancouver Island. I was pissed - had spent many hours getting paper work together for customs and they cleard us via phone. I WANTED TO BE INSPECTED!!
Second stop was Ketchikan where we spent the night. Walls were thin and sleep after 4:45 AM was impossible as the fisherman were early to rise. Next morning we were off to Juneau. Saw a pod of grey whales on the way and spent some time watching them jump, spout and swim - amazing creatures. After getting gas at Juneau, off to Yakutat. This run has some of the most remote, wildest parts of ALaska left. Absolutely nothing there. No boats, campers, airplanes - nothing but spectacular geography.
Final stop was Anchorage after a long flight over a marine layer, the weather cleared about 30 miles from Anchorage. Sunday was spent hanging around Anchorage hoping for the fog to clear so we could relax and finish the trip with some fishing. It didn't happen, so we rented a car and drove to Fairbanks. We had heard the fires in the interior precluded VFR flight so we wanted to see it in person. The last picture was taken near Nenana, about 80 miles from Fairbanks. The forcast was right - less than 1 mile visibilty. The air had a palpable smell of fire although they were miles away.
All in all a great time. No deals were completed along the way but we cooked up some plans for the future!

Boiler and I in the plane.

They bring cement blocks out on pallets so you can tie the plane up for the night.

Boiler finally got a whale picture - camera was probably still on macro setting with 3 second delay for coin photos.....

One of many unbelievable scenes along the way.

Final glacier before getting to Anchorage - Whittier.

They say 5-6 million acres are burning in the interior of Alaska. Late evening shot of the visibility.
Flew back home, arriving Seattle Monday 5AM - had to be at work at 7am - fortunately was able to take 2 naps at work.

I'm kind of concerned that your relationship has now advanced to weekend getaways.

Post flight, I hope?
Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."
fantastic thread thanks for the great photos!!!!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Neat adventure story,
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thank you for sharing the pix.
Hint: If you post the full sized landscape pictures may of us would use them as desktop wallpeper.
Out of curiosity, did you two know each before participating in these boards? I ask because I believe that one of the nice things about these boards is the opportunity to get to know people you might otherwise never meet.

Would have invited you but I had to take out the back seats to get all the gear in for the camping trip next week. My son and I are going to explore Alaska for 8 days. Didn't think you'd want to sit on the tent for 14 hours.
Besides, the thought of you in that shower cap still scares me.

Of course the scenery was amazing but I also enjoyed navigating with sectional charts "dead reckoning" (something I haven't done in over 20 years) and trying not to get so lost that we had to use the GPS to bail us out
Mark- In answer to your question. I did meet Tim through the PCGS message boards . When I look back prior to joining this group 95% of my coin "friends" were dealers. I can only think of a couple of collectors that I knew on a first name basis. This is a great place to meet and exchange not only information but also life experiences with like minded individuals.
Here are a few of my images from the trip
Thanks again Tim for the invite.

As well it should.

Final glacier before getting to Anchorage - Whittier. I think I see some '33 $20 St. Gs at the base of one of those mountains
Yall Suck !
Your flight reminds me of the prop plane my wife and I took over Mount McKinley a few years ago. Awesome.
We want to go again!
Speaking of which, where the heck is our Alaskan native darktone???????
Thanks for posting the additional pics, Boiler. Is that a noose hanging from the wing??
You guys ROCK! What a cool trip. Two great guys of our hobby too!

Love the pics, especially Mark's added images but especially his whale capture.
Sorry I missed this post the first time around. It's coin related because the plane was bought on the dividends of a great collection. And your co-pilot was met through the hobby. You can't get any more coin related than that. Where it brought you makes coin collecting look very trivial.
That said, my biggest fear is glancing into the co*kpit (naughty word on the forum) and seeing these two at the controls:
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
What's the red light that's flashin' behind y'all?
