The only young head sovereign ever graded MS66 by PCGS!

You'd think an 1869 or 1871, but no, it's an 1838 !

Stunning satiny spot-free gem, one of the finest Young Head sovereigns we have ever seen and the extremely rare first year of issue. We believe this is the only shield sovereign graded MS66 by PCGS (Terner had none).

Wasn't Mac who was saying "buy all the VYH sovs and half sovs in PCGS MS65-66, as their value will surely increase due to their incredible rarity? Well, here's one for your type set Mac, only the stratospheric price is non negotiable. image

Yes, it was, and I passed on that example when it was well under $5000, and an MS64+ coin, IMHO. Nevertheless and forgetting stupid numbers, it is a very exceptional coin....truly, I'm not kidding.

This just means I covet my 1860 1/2 sov. all the more.....cuz it's better. image Of course, every old crow thinks her crow is the blackest! image

The Terner 1842 and 1851 sovs were superior to this example, in fact, I never expect to see a sov. with the dripping lustre of that 1842.....but, if I do. image

P.S. this coin is or was listed in the Lakin registry...I'm guessing they sold it back to NEN.

quite attractive and it seems that the secret is out and British coins... Some are not that easy to get in a very high state of preservation... more on this later and in another thread.

Yep, and if you think top end Brit stuff is flying much higher, this coin had an ASK which was quite a bit lower this time last year......my crown, my crown, I'm so happy.

I don't think you're fooling us with that "woe is me, I'm a poor church mouse" line anymore, Mac.

That's a nice YH, even if it is a half sov.

    That 1838 is a sovereign.

Another tidbit which may have been mentioned before, but James Smithson of Smithsonian fame, kicked that little museum off with a gift which was almost entirely made up of 1838 sovereigns. Our sweet precious government melted most of them, and now you know the rest of the story.
