Best way to tone MS silver Eagles?

I have a few rolls of silver Eagles (87-89) range and would like to enhance the look by toning. Would like the process to take less than 5 years and it must qualify as NT. What are my best options and can I do it deferent ways for deferent toning effects?

Put them in a Dansco or similar album and place the album in a warm moist place such as on top of the hot water heater in your basement. Then give it time while monitoring the progress of the tonong.

Please reread my post. I only want natural toning that looks natural and will not be BBed by PCGS. I don't care if it take a few years. If I oven bake for 5 minutes will that be natural, look great, and will grade at PCGS? Must meet all three criteria.
  • Why do you want to do this?

Please explain how to use sulfur (sulphur) to tone a coin (other than putting in a paper holder).

I did read your post. What is NT/AT to you, Julien?

If oven baking results in a natural look, great look, and slabbed by PCGS, will that be NT?

I will defer to what is NT/AT to PCGS.

PCGS Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection, Chapter 11 page 282:
"....The most obvious deference between natural and questionable toning is the way in which toning lies upon the surface of a coin. When an original coin tones over time, the toning appears to be attached to the surface from the bottom up. There is an appearance of depth to the toning and the colors are rich and natural looking. When a coin is toned quickly by introduction of chemicals and/or heat to the coin's surfaces, the toning floats on the surface and color lacks depth......"
  • But why?

    What's the real deal here???

Because some people haven't figured out that there is nothing rare about "toned" coins and are paying insane money for them. Of course, I suspect that in 5 years, toned coins will be the norm like they were many years ago.

So who cares if he wants to tone a bunch of boring silver bullion (my opinion)? Geez, that's the only way I could stand to look at these dogs (my opinion). He said that he wants to take five years to tone the coins, so they look nicer. That hardly qualifies as AT coin doctor. They're his damn coins, he can do whatever he wants to do with them. Yes, that's right...whatever he wants to do with them. To accuse him of, or suggest some kind of wrongdoing is completely uncalled for, and downright rude. I think Julien is owed an apology.

    Pipe,
Read my posts and explain why I should apologize.
Personally, I couldn't care less what he does with his coins. They are his coins. He asked a question, I gave an answer.

I wasn't referring to you, ER. I should have been more specific. Hedger made a rather snide, sniping remark that was really uncalled for. Julien asked a very reasonable question, and he's basically being accused of some kind of sleazy behavior (by some). I'm not a fan of garbagy AT'd coins, but it seems sometimes that people are a little too eager to jump on the coin police bandwagon.

How many people here are storing coins in albums for a period of years in order to get nice toning on the coins? I don't see anything "wrong" with that. I got the impression that all Julien wants is some nice toning on his coins. Maybe he doesn't know about that approach. He said nothing deserving of that kind of criticism, that he is trying to "fool" anybody.
  • Sorry.

LucyBop got some great results with ASEs in a Dansco album in a couple years time. Search the forum for the pics.

I'd suggest buying a couple different kinds of albums for ASEs, filling them up, and storing around the house for a couple years. As some mentioned, you might try 2 x 2 paper coin envelopes.

Results will likely be "variable", meaning some will be ugly and others will look ok

if you try to rush it with heat or chemicals, they'll look like crap

Actually it was seeing some of the results that LucyBop has been getting that gave me the idea (who is not criticized and question about motives). If she does not respond to this thread I will PM here tonight.

Thanks XpipedreamR, I'm glad you see the thread for what it is and I promise to let everyone know before I dip the last 1913 Liberty nickel in nitric acid in my quest for a quick ebay buck.

PS: I just fond a 1986 quarter in pocket and have it in the oven now. Accepting offers starting at $100,000. image

i have had a bunch of uncirculated franklins in my dansco album for over 3 years. 20% have toned along the rims. 10% nice and golden and 10% a nice rainbow! image
