When I brought this new acquisition into the office this morning, my coworkers told me it was the most beautiful coin that they ever saw. I was absolutely moritified, considering some of the magnificent pieces I has shown them in the past, mostly crowns from the late 19th century. Philistines! I accused them of begin taken in by the color (anyone know how it was done?).

Holographic?
is that you end up being governed by inferiors. – Plato
I am not quite too sure if it is a "holographic" type, or it just a plain colored coin, but yes, if I am not wrong, such surfaces are "reprinted" or "reinked" many times in different angles to get such image. They keypoint is the angle though, like how it matters if you don't get the right cut in a diamond, you just don't get enough sparkers from it.
I think lithographic may be a better term. It certainly is not holographic.

You can't blame 'em for liking that. It's big, it's gold, it's UCAM- what's not to like? The "colorization" is merely another interesting facet to it.
