1970 and 1971 Topps Baseball Cards

Hi...I am totally new to this and need some advice if you would be so kind as to help. I have about 300 baseball cards from the 1970 and 1971 Topps Series. These belonged to my late brother who was killed in an accident in 1972 when he was only 13. My parents basically just closed his closet and room up and never did anything with his things. Now they are retiing to the south and everything has come to me so I am going to sell the cards that have remaned in the drawer for all these years.
I have done a little research but am in need of some advice. I am about to make my first submissons but can not for the life of me figure out which to submit. I have some of the famous players that even I have heard of and some I have never heard of. Most are in just excellent condition but which would be the more sought after cards, the big names or the names one has never heard of?
Also I am assuming these are Topps cards, they have ** TCG PRTD in USA on the side of each. Can anyone tell me what in the world O-PEE-CHEE cards are and what HOF stands for?
I think I have an idea of what the grading system consists of and how hard it is to get a ten but I am clueless as to what to send. I have looked over the population chart and looked at the price list. I am not sure I am reading it correctly. Can anyone give me the basics? I sure would appreciate it....Jillian

yeah, what you have are Topps cards.. O-Pee-Chee are cards almost identical to Topps, but printed in Canada..

In answering one of your questions, for the free submission (for signing up), always do the most famous players - if they are in decent condition. Even in mid-grade, they will yield a good return; otherwise, they will cost you $12 each to grade. Commons (players that you or I likely never heard of) will likely not get their grading fees back ($5-6) unless they are really high grade.

    yeah, what he said..

i'd just send in the 6 free subs you get for signing up(the most popular players, like Buccaneer said), and when you get them back, you can compare some of your other cards condition to them..

  • Ok..Thanks very much...I will do that and send in like the Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Reggie Jackson, Johnny Bench and so forth. The kit they send pretty much explains itself except for the fact there are 6 yellow like stickers in there. Am I to assume you put those, one each on the free submission cards?
Boy the more I look at these the more I am havng a problem trying to bring it down to the final six. But I will get there..Thanks for answering my questions...Jill
  • Jillian,

Do you have scans of them? If you are looking for the best return on your dollar, go to Ebay and look into the completed auctions for the cards you are considering submitting. You can compare (kinda) the condition of your cards to them and get an idea of what the Ebay value is of the cards. Mays and Williams have pretty devoted followings, so I would say those two are locks to submit.
