1970's football grades just in...

The 71's are the last of a set that I purchased several years ago for $175 (minus the Bradshaw - which I already have in PSA 8). There were more 7's that I hoped for and only 1 9 (I felt there were 5 or 6 9's) - but I'm very pleased over all. The last card is for sale - a PSA 7 2nd year Theisman CFL card. Not bad...PSA is really tough on those '71 football. I realize they have colored borders, but they seem to treat them more harshly than '63T baseball or even '71s with those tough black borders. I had two gorgeous 7's go unsold at $5 a couple weeks ago. They looked better than a lot of 9s from other issues. I think there should be a portion of the equation that factors in the reality that a miniscule touch or factory cut will be visible on a colored border but not on a white border. I see the top set has an overall grade of 8.3. That's a monumental achievement but crazy low for a set that's not even 35 years old. Anyone who attempts a 9.0 set is in for ..well...a beating unless Topps start reprinting them.

Greg- They finally popped! nice grades. I recently had a bunch of 71's graded also. I bought a vending box on 2001 and the results have been great. I think I have had nearly 100 8's, 10-12 9's and about 30 7's. I also have about 300 left that are WAYYYY O/C!

That Ralph Neely 9 is a 1/1! unless they haven't added yours on and then its a 1/2. Nice job!

Thanks for the kind words. I thought there would be more 8's in the submission but many of the cards had a touched corner or two, which as both of you have pointed out, is graded more harshly than other issues. I want to complete this set in PSA 8+ but this will be quite a challenge considernig all the PSA 7's that have come back on my submissions. At least I have the Bradshaw in PSA 8.

Has anyone seen the Series 1 vending box that Steve has for sale? He's asking $4k....I'm very tempted

I love 70 and 71 Topps football (as I do baseball for the same reason). It sounds like building a PSA 8 set wouldn't be that hard, knowing that the 71 would be more challenging to do. Please keep the submissions going to increase the supply!
