01 SPA Tiger RC v. 02 SPA Mickelson RC

I wish I could of seen the ending of the PGA tourny but I had to work. Lefty sure kept his cool. He has now moved into select company of
those golfers who have won multiple majors. A few more will bring him into the greats of all time catagory.

Anyone who follows golf cards knows that the Tiger Woods SPA Au RC is one of the hottest cards ever. Numbered to 900 it is
very hard to find. What you may not know is that the Mickelson AU RC from 2002 is only #ed to 799. It is also a fact that
Lefty has signed nothing after that and Woods signs in every product.

Sure Lefty is a long way off from having more majors than Woods, but it seems to me that in the future Mickelson's signature
will be much rarer than Woods.

Any comments?

I cannot comment on Auto cards.

What I can comment on is autos in general. Phil is known as one who spends lots of time giving autographs. On a regular basis he will spend lots of his time after a round giving autographs many times until the last person leaves...............

...it is one of the reasons for his popularity.

Tiger is still Tiger. He is Michael Jordan of the sports world at this time. Probably the most recognizable amercian figure in the world.

That is why his card is and will be more valuable in the long haul

  • It's a shame that vijay and ernie have no auto rc cards at all....anyways..... which would you rather have? A phil rc, an ok card, or a tiger rc, potentially one of the top 20 cards of all time. The funny thing is, phil's card may actually spike up in price after his last major win, whereas, after 2 majors this year, tiger's card is virtually unchanged!!! I just don't get it, tiger has just had the 2nd best year in history (majors-wise), yet his rc goes for around 1000. I think it should be going for much more, but I guess it's all about the perception of tiger not really playing well. Look at pujols' chrome 2001 rc auto going for 3000 ungraded, yet his career pales in comparison to tiger's.

My sources are telling me that Upper Deck has purchased the man-bra that Mickelson wore at the PGA championship and will cut it up into little pieces and insert into random 2006 SPA packs. image

Hurt..nice of you to stop by, I think I would of been shocked if you had actually contributed to the conversation...back into your
    bat cave!

I think what Im trying to say, is what IF Lefty becomes the next Tiger?? There are probably less than 1000 Mickelson signed cards
out there, this compared to thousands of Tiger cards. I agree that the Woods numbered 900 is a nice card...but the Mickelson
could become just as sought after, and we all know what happens when supply can't keep up with demand.

  • JS - I know where you're coming from but I believe Tiger will always have a greater following no matter how the rest of his career goes. Yes, Tiger has a lot more product out there and Phil declined to even be included in the 2001 sets, but I think Tiger's signature will always be in higher demand than Phil's. At this point, and in the recent past, Tiger generates more excitement. Phil just goes about his business while Tiger makes the game fun. I know in the 70s and 80s a lot of people complained about the lack of personality of the players. Most people thought golfers were too dignified and the game boring.

Check out some vintage players. How about Hagen vs. Jones, two of the best golfers of their era. Jones cards go for at least twice that of Hagen cards. I collect vintage golf cards and have received dozens of requests for Jones cards but rarely anyone asks about Hagen cards. The media and fans loved Jones so much that there was no one who could compare, even after his early retirement.

I believe a lot of it has to do with the media cast things, but Tiger definitely pulls off things that I've rarely or never seen done by other golfers in the 25 years I've been following golf.

J.S. Thanks for the good thread.
