Need help from educated board...

8.16.05 12:04 a.m.

Dear Group,
My apologies in advance, but I think it is safe for me to consider that
this is a fairly educated board on baseball cards and seemingly everything
else.
So here is my off-topic question. I recently purchased a home and am
looking into getting a plasma, lcd or dlp television. I have to imagine that
someone on this board has experience with this and even at some point
dropped $2,000.00 to $5,000.00 on a television.
I am looking at anything from a 32" to 50" flat screen television. Any
comments on a plasma versus lcd? Buying from Costco v. Good Guys v.
Circuit City v. Best Buy? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

  • Cnet.com is very helpful too.

If size isn't a huge issue, I would recommend DLP, and it's also the cheapest of the three.

Have you considered getting a projector?

I've mentioned this in another thread, but every time I talk to my polymer-engineering buddies, I get an earful about carbon nanotubes. The technology won't hit the market for at least 2-3 years, but if it's half as good as I hear I'll be the first in line to buy one of those TV's.

I own a rear projecting, HD ready, 53” Sony. For me cost versus size was the biggest factor. I bought it from a local guy off eBay about 18 months ago for about $800, and it retailed new for $2,200 – it previously was a 12-month-old rental TV and they were making way for the newer ones. It’s my friend 363 days a year – the other 2 days are spent moving the 185 lb beast. Works great image

    I went with DLP.

Dont forget resolution values ont he other two.

IMHO plasma and LCD are almost there, but still are lacking (wiping, burn-in,bleed, quality variance, etc)

    Loves me some shiny!
  • I purchased a plasma 42 (phillips) and love it, the picture is so crystal clear I really can see the images as if I was right in the stadium. I would hook up the main cables with the high resolution monster cables for best picture quality the 1080 high res I get from the satellite (direct tv) with the HD package clearly makes a huge difference. I looked at the LCD and am aware of the "burn" however, it only will burn if you leave the ticker on a screen for days and days, Like cnbc has or fox news has running on the bottom of the channel. If you are going to watch ball games, movies, and switch channels "burn in" will not occur. I looked at all kinds and with price, quality, features, and design being my main concerns, I fealt that this was the best choice.

I am sure others will have an opinon, but I am very pleased with my choice.

    Hope that helps a little.

Beware of plasma if you or your kids uses video games... Burn-in happens quickly and is irreversible!
