Any such thing as a 69 Seaver white letter variation?

I'm hoping some of you on this board can clear something up for me. Last night I posted on eBay what I believe is a 69 Seaver with the team name in white letters -- the "white letter variation" common to 69 Topps. A friend of mine has had the card in his collection since childhood, and recently sold it to me as part of a 69 set that I'm selling off. The card is posted on eBay right now (just type in 69 Seaver white letter variation and it will come up, it's the only one on there)...A few people have emailed me to say they didn't think there was a 69 Seaver white letter. Another eBayer, however, emailed me saying what will it take for him to buy the card before the auction ends right now. Has anyone else heard of a white letter variation for the 69 Seaver? Clearly, when I compare it to the other Seavers on eBay, the team letters are distinctly white. The rest of the card is in EX-MT shape or better, and the image of Seaver is in no way faded -- in fact it's quite sharp and vivid. I'm hoping someone who has put together a 69 set can shed some light on what this might be.

  • Hi 67topps,

I believe the color is off on your card. I don't believe this is a white letter variation as its the players last name which is usually white.
If you compare your card to the other cards up on the bay you'll see that while the team name appears "white" it's actually just lighter than the other cards as is "Seaver". Mets and Seaver should both be vivid yellow but are actually a very faint yellow. Also look at the cap and sky of other cards compared to your example and you'll see what I mean by the color being off.

Best of luck with your auctions.

Sorry for utterly bashing you in open forum, I did not know this thread existed.

I hope you don't take offense or quit sharing/reading from these boards, there is always room for more mindshare.

I am not an elitist either, I just don't like scams, and you obviously are NOT scamming.

    Sorry again.

  • Looks like my card...first name and position in white and last name in yellow. I don't see any variation. To the best of my limited knowledge team letter are not a variable.

Like they said. It is the person's last name that has to be white to be a "white letter" variation. It appears as though the team name has faded from the original yellow color.

That is not entirely correct. There are a few cards that have "white letter variations" in the first and position name. Card # 473 (Jose Arcia) and card #482 Jim Gosger both have variations in this manner.

With the Seaver though there is no known variation.

I did not realize it could also be the first name or the postion?

  • As I understand the "name" variations, it was Topps intent to have the last name one color and the first name AND position another...in the variation cards usually the first name and last name or all three end up the same color, usually white. The #485 Perry has the correct contrast but in that case the last name was supposed to be Yellow as it was on most of his cards. I have, by the way, found the #476 Red Sox Rookies the hardest variation to find and, of course, the while letter #500 Mantle the most costly. There are several other variations, mainly with the checklist (loops and bat colors), spelling errors and team error, even some hats not having their team emblem completly blacked out (a legal problem, I believe, between a couple of the teams and Topps) but those are a different story. Bottom line, I do not feel this Seaver is a variation IMHO. All-in-all, the 69 has one of the largest number of variations.
