Real or bogus?

Well, that lot of Mexican pieces came in. Overall I'm pleased; I'm a bit disappointed in the 1921 2 Peso piece (I'll post pictures later), but there's one coin that I'm concerned about.

The color of the Bolivian 4 Soles from 1856 just looks "wrong". Pictures below, but I can't really capture the color correctly. For lack of a better description, the color is too "steely".

Weighing the coin, it's close to the target given in Krause (Krause lists it at 13.5g and the coin weighs in at 13.8g). While that is a disparity, given the crude manufacture, what kind of variance is to be expected in the weights?

Aesthetically, I really like the coin! Gradewise, given the crudeness of these pieces, I give it an easy XF, if not AU.

What other tests, short of slabbing, can I do to ascertain the coin's authenticity?

Thanks,

-Dan

not sure... tough for me to tell without seeing the coin. The 1921 2 Pesos is one of my favorite coins that I am still looking for.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I really know nothing about these - beyond my area. But are they known to be overstrikes ? This coin appears, at least to me, to be struck over another coin.
    knowledge ........ share it
  • The 'steely' grey color could be due to dipping/cleaning....

I agree, and the coin looks completely real to me (of course, it's hard to tell for sure from a picture). I like these crude issues.
