design type set registry: who here thinks it should be modified?

As it stands the basic design type registry is not quite what it should be. In particular, the 39 coin set includes 6 seated coins, 3 Barbers and a choicefor the early coins between draped bust and earlier and cap bust. Each "design" should be represented by 1 coin in a design type otherwise it's just a reduced type set. Perhaps a modified 19th/20th century design type should use these titles:

1.draped bust
2.capped bust
3.classic head
4.matron head
5.braided head
6.seated

7.flying eagle
8.indian head cent
9.3-cent nickel
10.3-cent silver
11.shield
12.trade dollar

13.morgan dollar
14.liberty head nickel
15.Barber(10,25 or 50)
16.SLQ
17.Merc
18.Walker

19.buffalo nickel
20.Franklin
21.Lincoln
22.Jefferson
23.Roosy
24.Washington qtr
25.Kennedy

26.Peace
27.Eisenhower
28.SBA
29.Sacagawea

Any thoughts?

I like it the way it is. It was specifically designed to combine the early types (flowing, drapped, capped etc) so as to make the set very doable for one who doesn't want to spend a lot of money and focus on the various bust iterations. This is how early coins are often catagorized, such as in the PCGS price and pop guides, and in the back of Scott Travers price guide. If you want to work on some of those types why not check out the complete design type set, as it has many more of the features you are looking for.

Actually, I just reread your post. I probably missed your idea. Now I see what you mean. Interesting idea. Though, most type collections look for each type in each denomination.

and that's the crux of my idea. one coin representing a design, but having all the design represented. a little thinking "out of the box" here!

  • Cool idea for a set image

What I like about it is:
much simpler to complete than a full US Type Set, so it could be a sort of test for a person to decide if they want to go for the whole thing.
For a person trying to find a series to collect by date & mint, I think you could get a really good idea what design you like, and thus the series to go for. I think you'd only need to see 1 design of a Barber to know you'd want to collect it, no need to see all 3 denoms in the same design.
For a YN, or someone on a more limited budget, it also makes a lot of sense as a kind of type set.
Varieties are the spice of a Type Set.

    Need more $$$ for coins?

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
  • what's neat about this as well, and I'll let PCGS come up with their own title for such a setimage(minimalist design type comes to mind!image) is that the weightings should be fairly easy to figure out. Just take the cheapest for design. Barber=dime etc...
