what is the market for 20 and 50 euro vatican gold of Pope JPII?

I picked up the 2002 and 2003 20 and 50 euro gold proofs of the late pontiff during a month stay in Rome. I plan on passing them along to future family members but the 2002 is particularly sought-after. I have no other coins from the vatican except for two old common mint sets.

Thanks.

  • image I have no idea, but the sets get pretty pricey, are they a Vatican issue?
  • Personally I hate speculations as I hate to be wrong. But if you asked my opinion, my best guess is that, surely they will raise one day in some % of prenium due to their limited mintage. Also, there are too many fans of the ex-Pope (i.e. christians), but there are just too little of such coins to go around. Based upon this, my best guess is that, unless the current Pope or the future Pope does a "greater" job, the market value of such coins would "rarely" go down. (supply and demand. image )

But you know, you aren't most likely going to see the value rise up very significiantly until the next generation, i.e. your grandchildren holds onto them... image

  • Yes, they are Vatican issue. About 2800 were minted each year. The 2002 set were the first Vatican coins minted in the new euro currency. The coins are actually minted in Italy (they are considered separate countries now). This set is very expensive (cost me over $2500 US...and that was a GOOD price). The 2003 and 2004 sets are much cheaper. These are the only 3 years that the late Pope appeared on Vatican euro gold.

I converted to Catholicism in March 2005 (I am 44). I doubt that I will have children but hope to leave them to my niece or nephew if my sister is successful in giving birth, God willing.

    Thanks for the information,
    Barney

Welcome to the Catholic community! image Your coins can only go up in value when John Paul II's fast track sainthood comes into being. And even if it doesn't, those are way cool gold coins to have! image
