Card shop find!!!!

There are still card shops around? Who knew. So I'm visiting my girlfriend in another state and I'm waiting for her to get off work, so I pick up the yellow pages to see if there are any card shops in the neighborhood to kill time. There's one about 20 minutes away so I take a ride. I walk in and there's just stuff everywhere, almost completely unorganized, which is usually where you can find the stuff that's been forgotten about. I take my time to make sure I don't miss any gems and this is what I find:

- A really nice 1958 Jim Brown. Looks like a solid 8 with one touched corner and great centering. I'm going to send this off to PSA and then decide whether to keep or sell. SEE SCAN

- The equivalent of an entire opened box of 1975 Topps football that was either opened recently, or opened a while ago and never (and I mean NEVER) touched. The wrappers and box were there too. This is the most amazing box break I've ever seen in 70s Topps- Amazingly, I have over 120 cards I think will grade a 9 NQ or 10!! Compare that to the 50 or so pulled in the 78 Topps boxes I opened and did well on, and I'm completely astounded that this many sharp and centered cards came from an old topps box. Included are really sharp cards of OJ and Staubach. SEE SCAN

- A couple really nice looking 1950 Bowman cards- Tank Younger RC and Bill Dudley (HOF). Also, some random 60s commons that I think are high grade. SEE SCAN

The total for everything came to $240, which is about as much as the Brown's worth if it comes back an 8. Also, the guy had a similar box to the 75 football of 79/80 Topps hockey (Gretzky's RC), but there were also 7 unopened packs left with the sharp looking cards. The guy working wasn't the owner and didn't feel comfortable pricing it, so I told him to have the owner call me when he gets in. All in all a good way to kill a day. Also, there was a 1977 rack with Gaylord Perry on top and Yount and Catfish on bottom, but I thought $200 was just too much for it.

Lee- Awesome pickups! The Brown is actually a 59, but nice none the less. I love the 75 football set too, and those pups look sweet! Centering can be tough on that set and those all loo great. Keep us posted on the progress with the other cards you may buy, or the grades if you send em in. Good stuff!

Good find, I love disorganized card shops where the management has stopped caring. I wouldn't get too happy about those 50s as the centering is sure to garner OC qualifiers, but the 75s look nice and the Brown looks like at least a 7 as best you can see in the scan. I have had much better luck scavenging for comics lately (found 4 Teen Titans #18 for cover price this week) but cards are my first love. Too bad there are no good shops left in town (there are 2 actually, but I'm boycotting one for personal reasons and the other is way expensive).

Zef, yeah I knew the Brown was a '59- just a little typo. Maybe I was subliminally hoping it was a '58 (his RC).

I hear ya...But honestly that 59 is sweet. I just got some 59's graded and most were 8's and 1 9, and that looks just as strong. 2nd year brown is tough and I think you got a beauty there!

Lee, great looking cards - good to hear that there are some decent card shops still out there.

I'd LOVE to get my hands on that Younger for my '50B Rams set. What are your plans for it?

  • CDsNuts, let us know how much the 79-80 topps hockey packs are. I'd be interested in a couple of packs (in case you didn't want all 7).

The funny thing about the shop is that there were maybe 9 or 10 graded cards, most likely bought as part of collections. If he knew how much grading a lot of his cards would increase their value, I'm sure he'd send them in. I think it might be a cse of him being lazy rather than stupid though.

  • Ok - I will buy the story about the find of cards buried amongst the mess, but the girlfriend out of state bit is from high school when we couldn't find a girl locally.image

You wouldn't know her. She's from another state and stuff. But she's real real hot and let's me do whatever I want to her. This one time when her parents weren't home we did it on her kitchen table and stuff. But don't try and find her cause her phone number isn't listed. Hey, wanna go to the mall later? Bobby's working at Taco Bell and he can hook up with free nachos.

  • These are the stories and good fortune I enjoy hearing about CD. Nice eye and way to go, do tell us how they grade...

If anybody lives in the PA area, I used to find great stuff back in the 90s at these two antique malls that were only open on Sunday: The Black Angus and Reninger's in Allentown, PA. There used to be lots of dealers that had messy booths with crap piled on top of more crap, and every so often I'd find something truly great. I think back to all the stuff I could have bought and put away, but instead wasted my money on Pat Listach and Walt Weiss RCs. there's probably still some good things to find up there and if I ever have a free Sunday I'll make the drive.

As a bonus, every now and then The Black Angus would have a German Beer festival which would yield the highest of comedy: Grown men dancing around with steins full of beer and lederhosen (sp?) and bright red cheeks. Worth the drive alone.

Can't imagine how many other shops and antiue shows there are out there with great cards waiting to be found. Makes you want to get in the car and waste a couple months on the road looking. Just goes to show not everybody sells on ebay.

    << <i>...Reninger's in Allentown, PA... >>

Back around '85 or so, my Dad took me there, and I came across a box of cards from the early 70's through '78. They were all kind of beat up, but yielded some stars such as Yaz and Gibson--but nothing worth much. The guy wanted $20 for the box and we widdled him down, but I doubt that, even today, the entire box would be worth that much.

Right around this time I also read in "Baseball Cards" magazine about how you could make your '71s look better if you used a black crayon or marker on them. The '71s from that box got the crayon treatment.

I still have all the cards, and every now and then go through them. Memories!
