how long does it take...

for a grader to actually grade a card? roughly how many cards do you think an actual grader gets thru in an 8 hour day?

how long do you go over your cards before submitting? sometimes i'll go over them once and let them sit a day or two and then go over them again weeding out a few each time.

just curious.

Thanks,

I'll bet under "normal" circumstances where no special attention is necessary - about 30 seconds max.

On the more vintage stuff - an experienced grader is looking for tell-tale things like recoloring and trimming e.g. That would add another 15 to 20 seconds?

I'm just taking a swag at this thing - but from what people have said from watching graders at shows - they are quite efficient.

i remember from the psa grading video the graders seem to be in a dark room with just a jeweler's type of light. didn't know if there may be something with the dark room that may assist in looking for the flaws.

depends on whether it before or after the 3 martini lunch my friend.

    before: 30 seconds
after: 30 minutes (give or take a smoke break or 7)

  • I would guess honestly that they spend 2 to 5 minutes on the actual grading. I would hope PSA has them go through some sort of checklist form with each card. Maybe PSA has a specific checklist for each set. There has to be some sort of structure here. If there isn't there should be. I look at my cards several times before submitting, learned the hard way not to.

I mean this with all respect, but 2-5 mins a long time - let's split the difference - 3.5 mins. - I want you to set the kitchen timer and look at a card for 3.5 mins - it will seem like a lifetime.

Except when something really unusual hits them, I'll say most cards - especially new brands...15-30 secs and that's it.

edit: in no way am I making this guess in a pejorative way - it's just all the time an experienced grader would need. Plus, their service is relatively cheap per card.

I would think it would take longer, the higher the grade of card. I mean if the corners have dog ears or rat bites on it, you arent going to take much time with centering. However, if the card has sharp corners, you may look further into the centering, then if that grades 9+ you would take into account any small print defects, rough edges, etc.

I would hope they would take a few minutes on grading a 10 because of the money involved in it.

There have been many threads on this subject and i thought we came down to less than 2 minutes per card.

I am sure that a 1952 Mantle could be handled by a few graders...and some obscure pre war cards might take some extra time as well.

A 77 T graded 9 when it should be a 9oc would only set cost them a 50 bucks to fix...a fake Mantle could cost 1000's

Exactly. That's also why it costs more to have them graded... liability.
