1964 Topps Giants Set on Mastro?

I've been checking out this set in Mastro's current auction. Any estimate on what the set goes for? It seems that SMR is particularly unrepresentative of the values of the '64 Giants.

I certainly don't think there will be any bargain in this set - it's tremendous! But, hey, keep an eye on it - ya never know.

I can't even guess....but it will be up there!

This is a great set - I remember in the late 80s, no one wanted it - you could get the entire set for like 25$ and there were still unopened available.

I wish the scans were a little better - there could be some slider 9s there - especially with the key cards?

  • Yup, I agree. I am currently the high bidder, though more just to keep it on my radar than for any other reason. My guess is ~10k. I'm very curious where the market is headed for the Giants, as the market for the major non-SP stars (clemente, aaron, etc) seems to be very weak, while the SP's are still quite strong.

An all 9 set didn't hit the reserve of 8K a few months back and was broken up. Since then Steve Hart hit the mother load and has lots and lots available at very reasonable prices. FRobby and Cepeda aren't that tough in PSA 10, so assuming a 9 set is worth 8K (which seems high these days) this should be worth 8300. plus the buyers penalty max.
This is definitely one of the few sets where SMR is way too high- and there is a lot of very high grade raw cards out there. A few of the commons will kill you in PSA 9 (Brinkman, Romano, a couple of others) but for the most part 8's may not even be worth the grading fees, and 9's barely.

  • That's crazy. You think I got a decent deal on this lot? I probably paid less than 50% of SMR, but admittedly SMR is somewhat of a joke for this set.

    Thanx for the report Anthony
I was thinking close to 10 grand max - more than I would want to afford to pay for the set - I can't keep track - it seems for a while this set was hot?

I think I have a Kaline somewhere? I always thought they were fun cards. I remember Murphy had a set for sale in the 150 range a few years back - condition was nm-mt - no mention of centering.

I think the '64 Giants lot in Memory Lane was one of the 4-5 sleeper lots. Mays in a 9 was close to the cost of the lot (maybe 850.) and the rest was gravy.
IMO the toughest cards in 9 in this set are not stars or short prints but commons. But with higher grades being easier to come by lately and the overabundance of supply the pops on all of it may go way up. It's a fun set, just don't pay stupid prices since another will come along the next day.
edited to say- Packs seem to be a bit tougher. I've got a few but they don't come up often. And I've yet to see an uncut sheet, panel, or even strip.

As Griff had said, because you got the Aaron and Mays in 9 and a common 10, I think ya did good!

And you can always upgrade as you go if you don't want the 8s.

    Congratulations

  • Stone- long ago (aka a few years ago, an eternity in the graded market) this set was on fire. I believe a Clemente PSA 9 sold for over 2k at auction. I think one sold for about 15% of that on EBay a couple weeks ago.

Griffins- thanks for the vote of confidence. The Giants lot seemed especially out of place among the extremely valuable material. I wonder why the seller cosigned it to Memory Lane, and why Memory Lane chose to put it in that auction.

Unfortunately their loss was your gain.

Personally, there are so many lots put together by these guys that they probably don't give a lot of thought to the consignors - if you give it to them - and they put it up = is probably how it goes.

I remember a board member consigning a really cool full ticket to the tribute to Lou Gehrig game - and it was a more rare "variation" - they didn't give it the attention he thought it deserved and it went too low in his estimate. Moral to story - ask for reserve?
