Anyone collect cancelled checks of players?

On a whim I started checking auctions and buying cancelled checks of MLB players. A new way to to collect signatures. I was wondering if anyone else did this too.

I like to collect checks of HOF'ers that I can't find in any other suitable and affordable way.

I also know that Qualitycards aka Jay has some really nice check/picture combos that are outstanding.

There are a few others but I can't remember who they were.

Get'm now before the card companies buy'm all up and chop the names off for exclusive 1/1's!

  • I started collecting checks last year. It's definitely the most affordable approach....and safest way to get hof'ers. So far i've gotten bronko nagurski, pete maravich, bulldog turner, and tony canadeo. But when they pop up I always take notice.

    My biggest regret
In 1994, while being stationed in NYC, I had someone offer me a Ruth check from a large lot that was purchased from a big dealer in NJ. He would have given it to me for almost his cost - at that time about a grand. I didn't want to spend the money at the time - now see what they go for.

The other reason I wasn't as interested is because the checks don't have "Babe" on them. But still, major regrets.

  • Nice to see I am not the only one!
  • There was a time when collecting checks was looked down upon. When they first started coming out, alot of people looked at it like "Gee. Why dont they sell the guys phone bills and drivers license?"
It just didnt seem the same as an autographed program, card or index card. Too personal and not "sporty" enough.
This is another one that I definately missed the boat on, but the more you look at it (as long as the wife wasnt signing the checks) this is the best way to be 100% sure that the signature you have is the real deal....
  • I was in the running for this check, but am bowing out:

I have not seen this one as often as others - he was Prez of the American League from '31 to '58.

  • I've looked at these alot. I think they are very cool although I have not yet jumped into buying any. I've also seen where you can pick up many celebrity cancelled checks for less than $10. Not quite as collectible as HOFers but still a neat item.

I have about a dozen or so of some HOFers and other players. I think the most valuable one I have is Ray Dandrige - nothing too fancy [yet].

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I have a Ty Cobb cancelled check in my collection.

I have a Dolph Camilli (written in his old age) check and a check made out to NBA HOFer Jack Twyman and signed on the reverse by him (this one was for autograph services at a signing).

  • Nice checks Mike.

Collecting old checks is a great way to collect auto's, and for the most part, they're self-authenticating. I used to own a bunch of Joe D checks signed Joseph DiMaggio.

There's a gorgeous Mantle cheque on eBay right now.. I've always wanted one as well as a cobb but they're pretty pricey.

Thats an interesting check? It's dating back in 79 when there wasn't much need to forge but the sig looks interesting...notice all the "dark stop dots" in the sig...it doesn't appear fluid?

Still, to be honest, I wouldn't pay over 2 grand for a check when so many of his sig items are more affordable IMO.

I didn't look at it that closely but yeah it does have a lot of stop points.. and really it wouldn't be hard at all for someone with computer/graphic know how to create a cheque like that and then just forge the signature.. Good eye Mike.
