This is from the Allan Lovejoy collection. In my book, no one knew bust dimes better than him.
Sorry it is out of focus. I will get better pictures.
This is a test.

Man, from the picture it looks like that thing was minted yesterday. How are the surfaces...any contact marks to speak of?

<< <i>OK, I'm drooling! That's one of the best-looking Bust dimes I've ever seen! Most are dull with unattractive dark toning >>
With no disrespect intended to Oreville, Mr. Lovejoy or the coin - odds are extremely good that the coin has been dipped - hence the lack of "unattractive dark toning" or other toning.

And I'm not too particularly impressed with it...

Actually, I hear and feel no disrespect. I happen to agree with coinguy1. There is no way a coin can be nearly 200 years old without some help in keeping it relatively untoned. In my opinion, this coin was most likely dipped about 50-60 years ago and has since retoned slightly to a pleasing light golden hue that is hard to photograph. It is not an all white coin.
Most of my 19th century silver coins are moderately to somewhat deeply toned coins. This coin along with a couple of seated coins I own are relatively untoned. I happen to like the variety of having a few almost untoned/slightly toned coins mixed in with the more darkly toned coins to make my set more interesting. I have noticed that everyone likes things a little different. Some like dark and original, others like bright and newer/fresh looking. I like a little bit of both but tend toward the darker coins dated prior to 1917.
I must make it clear that I did NOT buy this Lovejoy BECAUSE it was very lightly toned. I DID BUY IT BECAUSE it was such a magnificent coin in all other respects. Strike, prooflike qualities, etc.
This is another coin I also own that probably has the real original toning acquired over nearly 200 years. It is an 1832 half dime also in PCGS MS-67.
I call it the variety and spice of life:
If someone posted that pic with a link to an Ebay auction, without the holder designation, everyone would say "looks like a dipped POS."
I don't know how any of you who have not seen the coin personally can comment on how great it looks. You're all blinded by the holder. Guess that's why this is the Registry forum...
Secondly, there is certainly a "leap of faith" here that if I bought this coin almost 10 years ago in this older holder and it has not been cracked out looking for even higher grades, etc. then it is considered "fresh" material that has not been shopped around.
But yes, if this coin were raw and sold on ebay with that picture quality, I would agree with you. This shows how pictures can be a poor way to sell a coin without showing the holder and holder designation.
You just stated the most important reason for the necessity of TPG services to protect my family from being ripped off after I am gone.

Bahhhhh - loney! I've seen enough bust material to recognize quality when I see it .... even if it's out of focus quality!
Nice prize Oreville.
