1936 20 Lire Italy -what's it worth?

I have a 1936 20 Lire Italy silver coin. Its been authenticated, graded and slabbed. Its grade is "XF - VF20". It is a key to the Italian set. Can anyone tell me what the market price for this coin is? Any help would be appreciated, 1geo.

Krause lists it at $500 in VF, $1,000 in XF. My guess is it would trade higher -- if it's real, that is.

These issues were heavily counterfeited. I hope it has been authenticated by someone you trust. image

    Who graded and slabbed it?

    Got pictures?

This is weird. Either it's VF20, or it's XF (40-45). It can't be both.

  • It was slabbed by ANACS. I too thought the grading was odd, I'v never heard of "XF-VF20". This was told to me over the phone and I have not yet received the coin back. 1geo

Aha. If it were ANACS and described as "XF-VF20", that is beginning to make a little sense. It is apparently a coin with a net grade for some problems. For example, "XF details, Net VF20, cleaned".

Do you know what the net grading was for?

At least with ANACS, you're pretty well assured it's genuine.

  • Sorry, I am ignorant of the details of grading and the terminology. I'll call them tomorrow and ask what all this means. 1geo

I'll bet you will find it is a net-graded coin. Ask them what the net grade was for (in other words, what problem caused it to be net graded).

It was probably cleaned. XF to VF is not as big a drop as what you'd see if the coin were scratched or badly whizzed. My guess is that it is a coin with XF details that was cleaned and has therefore been net graded to VF20.

  • I did not clean it but I had sent it to a NY auction house, Symthe [sic?] who may have cleaned it. They sent it back to me for grading and slabbing. That's when I sent it to ANACS. How does this effect the price? 1geo

This is a rare coin, so the market will decide about the price. I doubt that the auction house did the cleaning, it's probably the work of a previous owner ,it is not that uncommon. As a general idea, what the Anacs grade means, is that the coin is in XF (extra fine) condition, but the cleaning or whatever problem they detected and noted on the holder, reduced its value to VF20 (low end very fine) money. Still, an auction result will be the only true answer to this,as rarity is a very important factor.

  • I talked to ANACS this morning and they explained the grade as was explained by Robertson it in a previous reply, i.e., "details XF net VF20 cleaned". I appreciate the time and effort everyone has taken to explain to me what was going on with this coin. When I get it back, it was shipped from ANACS this morning, I am going to put it up on eBay. Thanks again for the information, 1geo

post a link to the auction when you do. I'd love to see this coin.
  • The 2006 Krause lists it as $200 in Fine, $400 VF, $800 XF, and $1600 Unc although as said before the actual market value has yet to be determined. Mintage was 10,000 while the next 5 years of the design's usage had mintages of 50 or less each. It contains .5145 of an ounce of silver.

I too would be interested to see it when you list it on eBay, though I would probably not be an agressive bidder for it (mostly because of my low budget).

  • I use to be interested in American coins and still have some interesting pieces. I acquired this coin many years ago from a widow in Virgina. Unfortunately I paid a lot for the coin and even at $500 would not make very much profit so unless the coin brings over that amount I will not sell it. Geo.
