Revisiting my post about the TrueView Photo Service...

$8 per coin to reholder and photograph. I don't think that is a bad deal. I'm shocked it's not higher actually.

Here's what I have a problem with. Someone can still steal images from the PCGS pictures if they simply crop just the coin out. I know it might take away from the nice photograph, but I think they should put some sort of object (or watermark) over or on the coin to prevent theft of these photos (for example, I insert a TBL into my photos - over the coin - just to ensure that no one "borrows" my pics).

I don't know...it's awful tempting to send in coins. I would love to see how good they are with photographing Lincoln Cent PROOFS. Now that can be tricky....

I plan to use the service. I think it would be cool if PCGS would make an annual publication of some of the top coins photographed.

Toby, you must understand that if you use the PCGS TrueView Photo Service, the pictures of YOUR coins become the property of PCGS and can be displayed anywhere that PCGS authorizes. It is all written in their rules. Steveimage

Eventually, I will have all my coins imaged through that service.
  • I have sent it my set of Saints for regrade and photo.I hope to get an upgrade or two, to help offset the cost.If i get no upgrades at least I'll have professional photo's without the scratchy plastic over my coins.

I sent in a 1/2 dozen of some of my best toned liberty nickels yesterday. I will post the results here when they are received in a week or two. It actually seems like a good marketing strategy. I wasn't really going to do anything with the nickels. Then I saw that for $8 I could get an image. As I was filling out the form, I figured, what the heck, might as well get them regraded as well. Then I saw that coins valued over $3,000 cost $55 instead of $35. So, all of a sudden I put in an order for $330. Not bad.image

What happens if you pay the $8 picture fee for a crossover or raw coin and it doesn't cross or grade? Obviously, no picture is taken. Does PCGS refund the $8/coin that was paid?

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
  • Can someone point me to registry set who has the PCGS photos? I was thinking about having PCGS do the photos when I send in my Morgan date set for grading(all ANACS & NGC crackouts).

How does it work with the labels by the way if you send in holdered coins? Does PCGS use the label from the cracked out coin or print a whole new one? I for one do not want to give up the green labels I have on many of my walker set if I decided to have PCGS take photos.

I am so happy that this service is now available. I asked for this service to become available as soon as computer photo abilities allowed it. That was years ago. I will not now send my coins in for this service or a pedigree service just because of the risk of fingerprints and other mishaps. It is not worth the loss of one coin in my collection to have the open risk of receiving a comprimised coin due to mishandling at the re-slabbing stage. Put a professional, experienced, "collector-at-heart" in charge of handling my coin to be re-slabbed, and I would reconsider. Please?

Registrydude, you don't really believe PCGS would get a fingerprint on or mishandle your coins during reslabbing.Don't you figure they use professional's over there, or do they outsource them to India.

I watched the PCGS video of their grading process, and cringed when I saw the grader sliding the coin out of the flip and holding it in his bare hands. There have been "accidents" in the past, most notably a low-pop Indian Head cent for which I believe PCGS had to reimburse the owner after a fingerprint appeared after grading. There must be some kind of glove that could be worn to minimize the chances of fingerprints.

That aside, the $8 fee for a quality photograph and a new holder seems very reasonable. PCGS should also offer the option of receiving an 8½" x11" hard copy photo, in addition to the soft copy that is e-mailed or burned to a CD.

Countdown to completion of my Mercury Set: 1 coin. My growing Lincoln Set: Finally completed!
  • OK folks...now that we all have seen numerous photos of people's coins that have been sent in under the TrueView service...I thought I would revive this post. I still have not been able to shoot any of my proof coins up close with the camera set up that I have and, to be honest, I probably never will.

I AM STILL TRYING TO TRACK DOWN TRUEVIEW PICTURES OF MORE MODERN PROOF COINS SUCH AS LINCOLNS, QUARTERS, NICKELS, DIMES, SAE'S, KENNEDY'S, SACKIES, ETC.

I have not sent anything in myself but I would really like to see photos of proof coins! Anyone willing to share?

I am toying with the idea of sending in a set of 14 2005 PR69DCAM coins that I just assembled for my daughter...but I'd love to see some photos before I do!

    Thanks!
