Anyone else think Superior's August auction was a bust?

I was just looking over the final prices and it seems like there were several items that ended surprisingly low...bargain low. At the same time, there was a slew of lots that didn't even catch an opening bid. I'll bet there are a ton of consignors completely unhappy about gavel prices...and the high fees they now have to cough up for the auction house. Is the memorabilia market starting to soften, or did superior drop the ball completely on this one?

I think the format (ending at 7pm sharp, regardless of bidding action) is not the standard for catalog auctions, and cost the house and consignors a lot of money. The scans in the catalog didn't resemble the cards (compared side by side at the National) and the bad pre press work scared off a lot of people I talked to.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

superior is crap which is why the prices were crap.. It's too difficult to find things, at least break it down into categories. Their auctions are ghetto why anyone would consign with them instead of lelands or mastro is beyond me.

On the other hand, maybe it's just my perception but I am astounded by some of the prices in the current Memory Lane auction (you remember, the catalog we got recently that has cards and sets that almost no one here can afford?).

If I were selling modern autographs, this auction would lead me not to consign with Superior. OTOH, it's great for buyers. image

  • Does this card really look like this or is it the scan?

Those '58 Topps cellos looked like a steal. Under $700 for a GAI 9.

Which leads me to believe that the 2007 and 2008 Topps Heritage sets are going to suck. image
