GOETZ: K-31 Joseph Haydn

K-31 Joseph Haydn, 1909, Cast AE, 65mm, wt.141.60g, Edge-punched ‘KGoetz’, AU, R.

This medal commemorates the centennial of the death for the Austrian composer in 1809.

Obverse: Haydn ¾ right Legend: 1809-1909/Jos. Haydn (cursive).

Reverse: Wreath of flowers and fruit encircling a sheet of Haydn’s music. Legendless.

One of Goetz’s early business ventures was to produce a suite of famous ‘composer’ medals in hopes that the love of the music would drive the market for his commemorative medals. Unfortunately, none of these medals were ever a big seller and thus, not many large cast pieces were made. This particular one was difficult enough to locate for Kienast that the image wasn’t recorded until the second reference book was published.

Interesting enough, this early medal is lacking the ‘patent’ “K.G.” or other known signature of Goetz on either the obverse or reverse. There are few Goetz pieces that don’t exhibit some form of his signature within the medal design. It does, however, have the edge punch at 6 o'clock and the 'patented' goetz patina.
