Which set do you like better in a lower grade : 1934-36 Diamond Stars, 1934 Goudey or 1941 Playball

Hi Guys, I've been thinking about starting a modest pre-war set to go with my 1956 Topps and 1953 Topps sets. I've done some research on the 1934-36 Diamond Stars, 1934 Goudey and 1941 Playball sets. Because of cash flow, I will be in the PSA 3/4 range with a few 5s mixed in when they are priced low enough. Do any of you have a feel for these three sets in terms of strenghts and weaknesses? Which ones of these sets do you think present better at this lower grade level? Also, based on current SMR values, which ones get higher prices due to real market value verses the others. Any info would be helpful. Thanks for your time, Neil

  • All three sets seem to be trading below SMR in the PSA 5 - 7 range. I'm not sure about the PSA 3/4 range, but I'd assume they are relatively easy to find and at modest prices. There will probably be one or two cards in all the sets that may be tougher than the others (34s the #1 Foxx is tough, Benge is hard too, but maybe not in PSA 3/4 range). I think all three sets are worthwile, I'm working on the 34 Goudey and the 41 Playball myself, but in PSA 5-8 range.

Im building a mid-grade Diamond stars and price wise its much more affordable than your other two choices, however low grades are hard to find, I have found psa 6 and above to be much easier to find althought a bit more expensive.

I find the 41 playball to be among the coolest sets ever...the colors just pop!

  • i tried diamond stars awhile ago. it's a pretty popular set because it looks very aesthetically pleasing and has some big name stars. Low grades are actually not too difficult to find. Just watch out for low pop cards..like any pre war set, they are a pain to hunt down in any condition. i stopped because other interests invaded my bank account.
  • Hi Guys, Thank you for all of the comments on this thread so far. I have been enjoying all of the conflicting opinions on each set. Now here's the golden question. Does anyone have any cards from these sets for sale in PSA 3 or 4? I would love to get in 2-3 from each set to compare them against each other. Neil

ttt I would like to see some cards side by side as well!!
  • neil...its my opinion that low grade diamond stars RAW are not too difficult to find. Callecho may be right when he states that low grade cards are harder to find...perhaps low grade cards already slabbed.

i sold all my diamond stars, unfortunately. good luck!

dont get me wrong there are a lot of Low grade PSA graded out there but its usually only stars or SP's ( the high series is very hard)

You might want to shoot for grades psa 3- 6 to insure that you will finish the set sometime in the future.

some of the commons sell better in raw condition than in a psa 2 or 3.

here are some scans from ebay
