received my july 29 scd today--only 10 days late!

received my july 29th issue of scd today--i wonder how the national is going to be?????!!!!! i received the august 5 issue two weeks ago and the august 12 issue last week--any other scd subscribers have this problem? good thing i dont ever buy anything from any of the ads--by the time i receive my issue each week most of the stuff for sale has probably already been sold anyways. (well, not really, just trying to be funny). i dont know what the problem is at scd--or is it the usps??? its bad enough that every issue comes held together with a single staple--i know staples these days are very costly and god forbid they actually use two staples to hold together the magazine--then they might have to double the subscription rate. its getting to the point where in about six months the magazine will be reduced to a one page newsletter and then they wont even need to use any staples at all.
always looking for 1958 and 1959 topps baseball in psa 7 and 8

    Hi Green
I have had that happen a few times over the last 13 years. I would call them and tell them you didn't get it on time and they will credit you with another week but since it's so cheap, it doesn't really seem worth it.

For what it's worth - I did a survey thread that I brought back once and am up to 70 respondents - and only 20% here subscribe.

  • I usually renew my subscription a few months after it expires. I get the letters offering it for $39 a year. Then it turns to $29 and then the "last offer" letter comes in the mail offering a year for $19 and I grab it. I really just enjoy all the auction catalogs that come with the paper. Living just fine without it right now.

I remember the thread here recently about how the latest SCD was back to being "big" again - and even though I subscribe, I had no idea what anyone was talking about. I now know - the "big" National preview issue hit my mailbox last week. After the National ended, of course.

  • How many pages is the average issue now days (ex the National issue)?

I've lost count of the number of SCD offers I've gotten in the mail. They keep uping the ante, and lowering the price.

I wonder why they just don't send a free copy or two in mail for you to preview. It'd probably cost less than sending all those offers. Stick a coupon inside for X amount of dollars off your next purchase or maybe some other freebie.

Somewhere around 70-80 pages, I would guess. Most of that is advertising, though. If there is 25 pages of actual content, that's a lot.

I recieved my issue late as well. Followed the next day by the most recent issue! On the plus side the articles have gotten better as of late and the last 2 issues have been much thicker then usual.

Not wanting to get into a major SCD debate - if one doesn't like the pub - that's OK with me. But, it's relatively inexpensive.

The articles are good enough for me. The last issue I read had something great about counterfeit cards - albeit mostly Star Co. which doesn't get much attention here.

The other article for which I posted had to do with the fact that there are only two companies doing BB cards in 2006 - that spawned quite a healthy discussion.

SCD size and to a degree, quality, is down due to a shift in the hobby (ebay) and a downturn in total interest/spending - why kill the messenger?

I agree Mike - but there is so little content in SCD anymore, and there is nothing there you can't get quicker and better from other sources (online, mostly). I would love to see SCD return to better days, but when I have to go through 16 straight pages of a cheesy auction advertisement week after week, only to get to more advertisements from other folks, and they can't even get this advertisement filled item to me in a timely manner - it's apparent SCD is on it's last legs.

Maybe I'm just one of those glass half full type guys but if I get one tidbit a week for the cost of the rag, I'm happy.

There's stuff that I wouldn't know jack about if it weren't for SCD. I don't participate over at net54, so I rely on SCD and a few other pubs for info on preWWII stuff.

Articles on bats, updates, info on stadium seats, jerseys etc. keep me coming back.

But, I do agree, the pub is slipping and probably in it's last year or two unless things pick up. I think they should consider on-line pubs with, for an additional fee, archive pub info of all their articles - totally cross referenced for easy access.
