Hello,
My name is Dan and I've been collecting sports cards for 11 years now, only given the fact that I'm 18. I've been reading these boards for awhile now and you guys seem to be very knowledgeable and helpful. Some of the topics are hillarious, Mike, you make me laugh when I read your posts. Anyway, I'm mainly collecting 1986-87 Fleer basketball in PSA 8 or higher and I have a completed sticker set from that year too. I'm also a big fan of Topps All-Time Fan Favorites in which I have the completed sets from 2003 to present. I have a raw Michael Jordan sticker from 1986-87 in which I'm looking to submit into PSA, it will easily grade an 8 or 9, it looks exactly like my 9 (centering and corners), if anyone can submit it for me please let me know I will pay for everything.
This board is awsome and I'm looking forward to getting acquainted with you guys.

    Welcome, DoubleD!

What is the origin of your ID?!! Just curious.

Nice start on that Fleer Basketball set -- over 50% and climbing! That sticker Registry for the same year is really a logjam, isn't it?? You're at 100% completion and in 13th place! I'd be real proud of that!

I'm fairly new to these boards, too, and I have to agree with your assessment -- there's a lot of knowledge and experience being shared here. I really appreciate it!

Best of luck on your collecting passions!

Greetings Dan!!! Im new here too but I can tell you that the people here are top shelf! They're willing to help out newbies like us!!! WELCOME ABOARD!!!
  • Hoof,
The origin of my username comes from the person who had a locker next to me in high school. My first and last name both begin with a D, and one day he just started calling me double d and it has stuck with me ever since. The 1986-87 Fleer basketball set is very tough, especially with the centering issue and how easily the borders chip. I have all of the stars except for Jordan in PSA 8 because that is all I can afford for right now, hopefully I will be able to upgrade them to 9's, and all of the commons will be in 9's. The sticker set is tough and you have to consider the centering and eye appeal. Both sets are fun to collect and also are very tough if you are looking for high grade examples. I mainly buy them on ebay and really didn't pay much attention when I was at the National in '01 and '04 in Cleveland.

Holy crap, there is a guy who has TWO complete sets in the registry with PSA 10's across the board. Now there is a collector who loves that set!

    Welcome Double D!

    DoubleD,

(See why I had to ask where your ID came from?! Ha!)

Thanks for sharing your stories. You're young and making some smart choices in getting a potentially lucrative retirement fund set up already.

    Keep up the good work!

On the serious side, that's a great start and I enjoyed your post. If you want my suggestion...?...I would consider diversifying your collecting and also consider an early and late vintage set - if you are considering appreciation and/or at least holding some value - is the fan favorite BB or FB? If you like BB - consider a nice 50s or 60s set - and if you like basketball - the 61F set is awsome - I've working on mine for 14 yrs. now - I'm kind of slow.

On the early vintage - consider a set you can afford in the preWWII era also. Since you're only 18, heck, you can take your time!

Just my thoughts - and good luck on your 86F set!

  • Mike,
The Topps Fan Favorites is baseball.
I have alot of 1956 and 1965 Topps baseball. I could complete both sets in the future only after my 1986-87 Fleer basketball set is complete. They were my uncle's baseball cards and I love the design of both sets, so what the heck.

Dang! It's ALWAYS the other guy who gets the choice, older hand-me-down cards...

Maybe when my day comes it'll have built up so much it'll be retirement day when it blows! (dream, dream, dream)

DoubleD, I've got some '65Topps, too. What condition are yours in?

    Thanks,

  • Hoof,
The condition of the cards are PSA 3-4. The corners are rounded on pretty much every card and there are alot of creases visible. Nothing much to talk about.

(Just back after watching the local TV-forced Mariners beat my Twins again...getting psyched up to go to Seattle to watch them play the Angels on Sat...)

    DoubleD,

Yeah, my '65s aren't in the best condition. They're all the raw ones I collected as a kid. I'll probably never try to complete that set raw or graded. I've got complete raw sets of '62Topps, '63Topps & Fleer, and '68Topps cards -- and a bunch of Topps/Donruss/Fleer sets from the '80s. My only PSA Registry sets are '62Topps and Kirby Puckett...

    Thanks for the update!
