Here's another example of a coin that seems to be way more rare than Krause gives credit. It's amazing how the prices on many of these pieces just keep getting pushed up.
I think the buyer made a good deal, these are hard to come by in grades above VF (and uncommon in any grade). The prices have always been higher than KM values for scarce/rare coins from Portugal and former colonies (and the common ones are way overpriced).
In St. Thomas coins, surviving rate is more important than mintage, coins of 10 escudos 1939 and 1 escudo 1951 are easier to find than a 2.5 escudos 1951 (with the exception of the 1971 series, all 2.5 esc. coins are the toughest of any given year/series)

Not many. That's the only one I've ever seen for sale. I only wish I could have afforded to bid.
