I actually use an unconfirmed address. I have stuff sent to my office and I cannot confirm this address as I have no CC adressed there. If people take issue with this I have paid with my home address which is Confirmed.

If he does a lot of transactions I bet someone else has taken issue with this before. I think you should ask him to use a confirmed address if you don't feel cool with it.

    Does your TOS address this?

BTW, you can block people from paying with unconfirmed addresses in your paypal preferences. I do this, and I've only gotten one unapproved payment from an unconfirmed address the last few years (I don't know how that lady got her payment through, lol).
  • I say I don't take unconfirmed addresses, and I reject it when someone shady looking sends it. But I'd say about 1/5 of the payments I receive are from unconfirmed... and I accept them as long as they have good feedback. However, I do withdraw the $ immediately and wait a day or two for the "pending" withdrawl to clear before I ship.

Oh yeah, I always wait for the PENDING to clear. That is a must.

In my auction descriptions, I list in big bold letters that I do not accept payments from unverified accounts, but that never seems to stop them. When they do pay, I'll check their feedback and history on eBay. If they have history and it's not a big $ card, I'll just let it go. Recently though I had a "winner" (in every sense of the word) try to pay via an unconfirmed account from Taiwan, with a whopping 2 feedback at the time. That got rejected right away. I'm still waiting for payment (and filed a NPB against the person yesterday), but I'm not holding my breath.

  • Sorry to dumb this down a little bit... I know what a confirmed address is for paypal (confirmed the same as cc account address), but have to admit I don't really know what the point or danger is...

What is the actual danger to me when I accept payments from unconfirmed addresses (which I do sometimes as well). How might I get screwed? I have the money, it's in my paypal account, so what could happen? I have a business account and accept cc payments.

Can someone give a quick lesson? Thanks.

thanks for the input.. ive told the person to confirm their address with Paypal, or i'll refund the money.. if they want the card, they can confirm their address.. otherwise, screw 'em.. i dont need their money that bad and i'll just re-list the card..

if you sell and ship a card to an unconfirmed address, Paypal doesnt offer "seller protection".. the buyer can then tell Paypal that they didnt receive the merchandise, and Paypal will take the money from the sellers account (or freeze the account if there is no money in it)..

Zef- I do the same thing, have stuff sent to my office rather than at home. But what you can do is tell paypal you would like to confirm this address and they will mail you a password to your office and you can confirm that way. I did this recently so that I could purchase from people who requre a confirmed address.

I didn't realize the value of a confirmed cc address either. Glad I finally got it done -- although if I remember correctly I HAD to do it because I ran out of the initial PayPal credit line (or whatever) and had to confirm to continue using PayPal...

    Great discussion! Thanks for it...

  • Some people (myself included) use a different address for shipping for security purposes, and its usually a PO box. The simple solution is to send such a buyer an email via eBay mail, and just ask them to confirm the mailing address because its unconfirmed on PayPal.

In the "bad old days" before eBay and PayPal were linked (and now are the same company) somebody other than the winning bidder could send a payment to the seller via PayPal and "steal" the item from the winning bidder (assuming the winning bidder waited a while to send payment). That can't happen now.

zef- You will need to use the "contact us" link which can be found at the bottom of most pages. Follow the instructions until you get to the part where you can type in a question and send it off. Be sure to inlcude the address you would like to confirm. They generally will reply in 2-3 days and confirm that they are sending you a confirmation letter to the address you want to confirm. The whole process takes about 7-10 days, but its worth the trouble since you can avoid the CC thing.

Once you get it go to the my account "overview" tab. Under the activate account in the upper left corner, you will see a confirm location link. This leads you to a page that allows you to put in the 6 digit passcode.

Most unconfirmed addresses are not an indicator of potential problems. But you are not required to ship to an unconfirmed address. You can immediately file a nonpayment dispute (that's the only way to get to the next step) and one of the choices for not completing the transaction is that the buyer used an unconfirmed address.

I don't think eBay voids the transaction immediately. I believe they give the buyer a chance to provide a confirmed address. If he cannot, or does not respond within 7 days, eBay will void the deal and credit your fees.

By the way, filing a nonpayment dispute is also how you start the process of mutually canceling a transaction (such as when someone claims they accidentally won your auction and want to back out). You get your fees back when the buyer confirms it is a mutual cancellation.
  • Is the only way to be confirmed or verified is by giving Paypal your bank account numbers and let paypal make a deposit? I had to do it when I hit my Paypal spending limit or something like that. My wife does not want me to send out banking info and account numbers.

One of my employees just got burned for $200 by shipping to a non-confirmed address. PayPal basically told him there was nothing they could do about it.

No, see above. You can email Paypal and they will send you a letter with a passcode on it to your "confirmed" address. Although I do think there is a difference between "confirmed" and "Verified". I think to be verified, you do need a bank account.

Canadian Verified members do not currently qualify for and are not covered by the Buyer Complaint Policy or the Seller Protection Policy.

Guys, do not accept a Pay Pal payment from an unconfirmed address. To be protected under the Pay Pal seller protection you must send to a confirmed address and provide online proof of delivery.
