What's in a (seller's) name - 53 Mantles on Ebay

Legit 53 Mantle PSA 7...

Legacy 53 Mantle PSA

And here's another...

Not that I would take a chance either... I don't think. But...

Although there's nothing obvious to suggest the one below is fake or a scam - granted the seller clearly isn't a dealer and doesn't sell any cards, or much at all, on ebay - it is mildly tempting though. If I, as a part time dealer with solid ebay reputation/feedback, were selling this card I'd be sure to get more than the starting price. Is it worth the risk that it's a scam (apparently the 500+ views don't think so)? Am I missing something obvious about the scam?

His last 3 purchases include a hat, a playstation USB cable and a air sealed bag thingy...probably a victim of a phishing scam scam.

Notice his other items ..all high profile cards, where do they come from?

I just don't like the cards, that PSA 7 Mantle is not that nice looking or is the PSA 8 Snider, IMO. I do not know the sellers story, but I think the cards are not that nice looking. Though I do not have that kind of money to spend on one card.

I would only spend money like this with a seller like this if I could pickup and pay for the card in person - or wire money to a friend and have the friend inspect the card before paying.

I agree, from the history it looks like an account hijacked for a hit-and-run. Hasn't sold anything at all in 6 months, so you can't see what those sales were. Feels scary to me. 500+ views and no bids mean that's the consensus opinion.
  • I asked the seller about the history of the card, expressing concern about his/her lack of card sales, how it doesn't really fit their ebay history etc etc. I think I'm going to bid! Oh, wait, just changed my mind.

Here is the reply I got:

    -------------------------------------------------
It's from my personal collection. I have most of the '53 topps set
in PSA7 including almost all commons. I tried to complete the
set, but never did. My interests have shifted from collecting
cards to collecting photography, this is why I will be selling off
almost all my cards over the next couple of months. Everything I
ever sold on e-bay is from my personal collection. If the card
was fake or a replica I would certainly make note of that.
  • Guess others weren't so concerned. The Mantle sold for over 3k with a handful of (apparently) legit bids in the last 8 minutes, but nobody touched his other two cards.

And it sold for only $100 less than the Legacy card. This is especially surprising considering that the Legacy card was probably a nicer card (at least in my opinion) as well.

His other two cards were priced with a min. bid right at SMR, which discouraged any bids. The Mantle was priced $700 below SMR and more than $1K below actual market value. The seller convinced me he was probably for real, even though the ID he was using didn't look too reassuring.

I'm very surprised the much nicer Mantle sold by Legacy went for only $100 more. I was watching nicely centered '53 Mantle PSA 7's regularly go for $3500 to $3750 on eBay not too long ago. The Legacy customer did nicely.
