how tamperproof are those holders?????

was at the national last week and spent a few minutes at the gai booth watching one of their workers slabbing unopened packs--the process looked pretty simple-- he had a stack of tops and a stack of bottoms and all he would do was put the pack into the bottom part of the holder and then place the top piece of the holder over the bottom piece that holds the pack and press the two together and VOILA! they go together pretty easy, so wouldnt u think theyd come apart pretty easy, too? has anyone ever tried to bust one open by prying it apart from the back? not that i would try, but i bought a bunch of vintage graded packs at the show and when i saw how easy they were assembled, i began to worry that maybe someone could crack a pack out of a 6 holder and put it in, say, an 8 holder--any thoughts on this?????

  • I recall Joe Orlando posting a year or two ago in the wake of WIGWAG that the PSA holders are not so much as tamper proof as they should be considered tamper evident. GAI holders are sketchy, some are solid and others come apart way too easily. I may be wrong regarding the PSA comment but I am pretty certain that was the terminology used.

I thought that those "bubble" type packs were sonic sealed - just like the plastic slab/holders?

They were designed in such a way that instead of heat - sound is under with pressure to "lock" the two pieces together?

I guess it's time to go check out the packaging industry for input?

  • stone, there was no sonic sealing at play here--all he did was simply lock, or snap, the two pieces together with his hands--as far as i could see, no machinery came into play. i would equate the gai pack holder with a "blister pack", along the same lines as the way a 10 pack of batteries is sold, or the way they package small electronic appliances (where u need to use an exacto knife or a razor blade to open the package to remove the item without cutting yourself on the sharp plastic). and i also just remembered that i did see the gai guy who was slabbing the packs use a razor blade to open an already graded pack to remove it to put into another holder (perhaps the holder it was in had the wrong flip)--so i guess the only way to remove the pack from the holder without damaging the pack is by cutting it open--i guess if there was indeed a way of removing packs from holders without ruining the holder (or the pack), it would defeat the whole purpose of pack grading.

I"ve got a whole bunch of packs in holders right in front of me, and I just went at a '75 mini pretty good with no luck. I would think it would be fairly evident if they had been opened.
I had hoped the PSA would redesign their holder in light of past incidents, or at least get very detailed with what to look for. I did crack open about 40 SGC holders this morning and those were so easy to pop it was scary.

    Griffins,

On the SGC holders, once they were popped open could they potentially be used again or do they show the signs of being cracked. I just wondered of people reholdering with a cracked case or if they are rendered useless (which is what I hope).

As soon as they crack the seam goes a bit frosty, just like PSA's. Don't know if that could be reglued or otherwise doctored, I always just toss them.

I have opened a bunch of gai packs and even after cutting the topps off , I can't get them apart and have to cut down the sides. I would say that they are sealed in a way that you are not going to get them opene without damaging the holding in a very noticible way
