<< <i>I have one of each of those sets in OGP + the 47, the 49, the 54 thru 64 sets and the 99 thru 08 sets. The only mint sets I don't have yet are the 48, 51, 52 and the 53 sets. >>
At the last minute the mint came to believe that the "authorized mintage" was actually the required mintage. With no time left to produce more than ten million sets they ran these off on high speed presses and unceremoniously dumped them into 55 gallon drums.
These coins are distinct and far lower quality than the regular issues which are essentially mint set coins. They were packaged in plastic with no white stripe and had terrible sales until they were finalkly destroyed in 1982. They were selectively marked for melting so can be tough to find now.
BTW I personally can count 2500 1968 sets going bye-bye. the coins are saved in rolls but the sets are gone. The garbage halves I sold, probably went to the smelter when silver was $22.
I also know of an equal number of 69 sets getting cut up.
BTW - graded MS66 1968 halves are CHEAP!!! Out of 2500 sets I think I made 10 MS66's, and a sinlge 67. I won't sell the 66's for what they go for.
methinks CladKing has done his homework on this issue.
As a collector of moderns, including tapping my Mint & Proof sets for the album slots, I've always been fascinated how many intact sets survived. Good work CladKing!
