Anacs slabs and bankers marks.

Anacs slabs and bankers marks.

I wonder when Anacs is going to change their slabs? Almost all of the other slabs in the industry are now uniform and fit in the Eagle, and other Slab books. I have gotten where I just don’t even look at anacs material. Just a little rank for a Sunday.

FYI

In a recent Email from Paul A. DeFelice V.P. at ICG I ask him about certifying coins with bankers marks since I had found a guy in Canada that had lots of pretty coins, but many had “ bankers marks” or those little test punches to make sure the coins were real. This is what he said,

“We typically do NOT grade coins with bankers or chop marks.”

I don’t know what NGC and PCGS do about these, but these marks are generally on ancient coins that they don’t slab.

It appears that these coins, with these types of marks should be looked at as damaged, in particular if a collector decides to have their coins certified latter.

Regarding Anacs, they have a new head grader, ex-ICG guy, and apparently they were showing a new slab that they are working on, at the ANA show, but I can't confirm, I wasn't there. A new slab is an extremely costly and complicated procedure as I recall D.Hall saying a few years ago.

Personally, I wish all slabs had the ANACS' size, but that's another story, I even like the ICCS holder, basically a flip. image The one I can't stand for its bulkiness and ugly design is NGC's, what a pity that they are now leaders in world coins so I have to go with the flow if I want good returns.

In terms of ancient coins, the ANACS policy on banker's marks and chops is something of a moot point, since I believe they no longer grade those.

And on more "modern" coins such marks would normally be considered "damage". However, I was surprised to recently discover that PCGS not only grades chopmarked US Trade dollars, but even has a Registry Set for them!

  • ANACS does grade coins with chopmarks, however it considers them as a type of damage and downgrades them for it.

Personally I like ANACS sized holders - less wasted space. Anyway ... you're supposed to be buying the coin - not the plastic image

I'm really surprised that PCGS allows chopmarks ... they are damage! When is PCGS going to start allowing cleaning?

  • I have no disdain for ANACS holders, but use NGC more so than ANACS, why would there be an industry standard?
