Hyperlinky

I know members and visitors ask frequently about unopened 71 Topps, where he is an auction. I couldn't find other post to reference, but I think this is already discussed somewhere, my bad ...

That comes out to be about $40 per card. That's not bad at all for the buyer, I don't think.
  • Wow! I always worry about old racks being thumbed (fanning the cards out with your thumb in each of the three sections) through though. I used to be able to thumb through every card at K-Mart in every rack pack they had in the late 80's as a kid and anyone after me wouldn't have known. Was too young to find anything wrong with it, and thank goodness I didn't have enough allowance to buy all the "good" packs they had at any one time. It makes worry that someone has thumbed any old racks. I am surprised that went this high. Anyone else ever consider this, or do I just have a shady mind? You could even determine condition of cards somewhat doing this.

Sure hate bidding on something like this when this seller knows or should know how important a closeup scan would be of the cards in this pack. Not even using the ebay "supersize" feature for 75 cents? Suspicious in my view as far as what condition the cards are in. I'll pass - bad feeling on a lot of EXMT type cards in that pack.
  • I think that's the most expensive rack that I've seen non GAI graded. $40 a card?!

The dealer seems fairly legit and knowledgable about packs.

You'd think that he would have stressed the fact that Bert Blyeleven's RC AND Steve Carlton were on top. It's almost as if he doesn't know that it's Bly's RC and that it's desirable.

$40 a card is a good price? Wow, I had no idea.

You could buy PSA 8's of Rose, Ryan, Yaz, Aaron, Seaver, and Clemente for that price, at least according to my price guide. Wouldn't that be a lot less gambling?

Are you sure you not looking at a 1987 price guide? Carlton is on the low end of the 71 stars and the SMR is $65. The PSA 8 commons are much less than $40 (more like $12-15 I think) so it's probably not a good deal unless there's another star card in there.

    Steve,
I just meant you could buy all those cards in PSA 8 for the $2000+ spent on this rack pack, not for $40.

The entire set books for $2500 in NM condition, so I was just surprised $2000 for a rack pack was a good deal. Or maybe I'm just confused as usual.

    Shawn, understood, I misinterpreted.

Besides, I think it is the chance of getting 9s (plus maybe one 10??) that is driving this (and many other vintage packs sales).

1971 rack packs are probably a pretty in demand item for unopened collectors, especially w/ Carlton and Blyleven cards on top. I can't really see how much over the $2000k+ this would've gotten if it had been GAI graded though.
